The MCU X-Men Debut Should Copy X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s Only Good Scene

The MCU’s X-Men starting point should borrow from the stunning opening montage of the otherwise deeply disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The MCU XMen Debut Should Copy XMen Origins Wolverines Only Good Scene

The MCU’s X-Men debut should copy X-Men Origins: Wolverine’s only good scene, and bring back the Fox franchise’s most valuable character. However Marvel Studios decide to bring the mutants to their sprawling Marvel movie universe, they face the issue of living up to the precedent and high-bench mark set by Hugh Jackman’s Logan. The best solution – for two compelling reasons – would be to reuse X-Men Origins’ opening montage.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was supposed to kick off a new line of spin-offs for Fox and would have been followed up by an Origins movie for Magneto. Unfortunately, the final product left a lot to be desired, despite boasting some legitimately great elements – like Liev Schreiber’s Victor Creed and Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson – and the follow-up was canceled. Despite the poor reception, though, Wolverine was an enduring enough character after his central role in the mainline X-Men movies to warrant the continuation of his own movies that explored more of his backstory and ultimately his end in Logan. The greatest part of the film, however, was the stunning opening montage that saw Jackman’s Logan and his brother Creed fighting together throughout time.

Unfortunately, the montage set the bar too high for the movie and there’s actually a case that the opening is exactly what the entire Wolverine origin movie should have been. Now that the MCU is looking forward to the start of its own X-Men series and will be faced with the inevitable question of when and how to use Wolverine, that montage should be used as the inspiration.

The MCU’s biggest problem with Wolverine is that Hugh Jackman arguably did him too well. Marvel Studios are now faced with the prospect of having to follow-up his performance but also without hamstringing the X-Men in the MCU by over-relying on Logan and also making something different enough to avoid accusations of copying Fox. It seems likely that the reboot will fail in one of those respects, because of the complexities required in finding the right balance, and the smartest way to go would be to lean into the established Wolverine brand, but not copying the same model by starting with a historical Wolverine origin rather than dropping him into the MCU fully-formed.

Both the MCU’s X-Men narrative and whoever takes on the Wolverine role need the space to grow and following Fox’s model of keeping Logan away from the main timeline at least initially offers an opportunity for that valuable distance. It also opens up the chance for audiences to see a piece of Wolverine’s past that was only tantalizingly teased at the start of Origins without ever being delivered upon. Wolverine, after all, is interesting as much because of his past experiences as the fact that he can’t remember them and starting afresh before Logan enters the Weapon X program also offers a chance to tell his entire story up that point before heartbreakingly rebranding Wolverine as a mind-wiped villain in the main MCU timeline to offer a new perspective on the character.

Marvel’s. approach to Black Widow and Eternals proves that linear timelines are not necessary and jumping back to a historical setting to when Wolverine was younger to witness him interacting with interesting points in human history where he’d be most useful (primarily wars) is something the Origins opening montage proved could be great. It would potentially also lean into successful elements of both Captain America: The First Avenger and Wonder Woman, which both proved that a modern setting is not paramount to successful superhero story-telling. And that distance would also allow the MCU to introduce other X-Men – who perhaps didn’t receive their share of the limelight in the Fox movies – to build to an Avengers-like ensemble without pulling the trigger too early on Wolverine in the modern MCU.
