The show American Horror Story is an FX Original and has been on television since 2011. For 10 years now, the anthology series has provided horror fans with ominous storylines, deeply disturbing characters and creatures, and an overall theme of dread. American Horror Story isn’t for the faint of heart and provides a bevy of shocking moments that fans will never forget.

In particular, there were moments in each season that were unbearable to watch and hit a sensitivity point that might’ve been too much for some fans. An impenetrable shock value is what the creators go for in this series, and it’s what makes it so memorable. Some fan-favorite characters met their demise in a harsh and gruesome way, while others had it coming. Either way, these are the most hard-to-watch deaths in American Horror Story thus far.

9 Coven: Kyle Spencer

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

Unlike his fraternity brothers, Kyle Spencer (Evan Peters) is a likable guy, and upon meeting Zoe at a party (Taissa Farmiga), he’s immediately attracted to her. Madison (Emma Roberts) is in another part of the house, and it appears she’s been drugged. After a tough scene where a group of men assaults Madison, she seeks revenge on them. After leaving the party, Madison and Zoe walk out into the street to see the frat boys leaving in a bus. On that bus is Kyle, and while he’s very much against the assualt, he had little chance of surviving when Madison flips the bus with her powers.

In the end, Kyle is found in the morgue in several parts. His body was severely damaged, and when the girls find him, the sight is horrific and sad. Although he was brought back to life in a Frankenstein sort of way, he was never the same again.

8 1984: Margaret Booth

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

The most recent season, 1984, had various villains throughout the season, but perhaps one of the most shocking was Margaret Booth (Leslie Grossman). After her past was exposed, Margaret’s evil deeds were shielded by others but did incredible damage to those around her. Most of the main cast ended up dying because of her, but karma came back for her at the end.

Margaret tries to organize a music festival years after the carnage in 1984, but she’s captured by the Camp Redwood ghosts and thrown into a wood chipper. This is a creative way to go out, but it doesn’t end there. To ensure she doesn’t die on the property and remain there as a ghost forever, they attempt to haul her off the property. This doesn’t work, and she ends up as a camper forever.

7 Freak Show: Maggie Esmerelda

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

Maggie Esmerelda’s (Emma Roberts) intentions towards the circus folk weren’t innocent at first, but after her feelings for Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters) grow, she pulls back from her con artist ways. After getting captured by Twisty (John Carroll Lynch) and nearly dying, she escapes with Jimmy.

Her initial motives are found out, and to redeem herself in the eyes of Jimmy and the others, she volunteers to be a part of Chester Creb’s (Neil Patrick Harris) act by being sawed in half. Of course, it isn’t magic or an act at all, and she’s literally sawed in half. The moments before, during, and after the scene are disturbing to say the least.

6 Asylum: Shelly

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

Asylum had some brilliant moments, while others were psychologically eerie in more ways than one. A lot of the trauma and pain came from Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) and Shelley (Chloë Sevigny) gets the worst of it.

The reasoning behind Shelley being there is utter nonsense, and because Arden stands for purity, his experiments are strongly directed towards her. Over several weeks, her torment by Arden is apparent, and even though she appears in six episodes, the damage is irreparable. Eventually, Monsignor Howard (Joseph Fiennes) chokes her with a rosary to end her suffering and keep Briarcliff’s secrets locked up tight.

5 Murder House: Joe Escandarian

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

Many signs point to Murder House being the best season of the series, and there’s no doubt it had some harsh deaths. But the worst of them has to do with the house’s maid and a short-lived character named Joe (Amir Arison). In the episode called “Open House,” Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) demands Moira O’Hara (Frances Conroy/Alexandra Breckenridge) get rid of Joe, who is eager to buy the home and demolish it.

Joe is a sleazy sort of character and is instantly attracted to O’Hara. O’Hara lures him to the basement where she bites off an extremity, and Joe bleeds out. Many scenes aren’t shown, but the facial expressions and blood are all the viewers need to see to know this scene is gruesome.

4 Cult: R.J.

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

Cult wasn’t the best season of the bunch, but it did contain many sensitive topics, scenes, and even horror movie references viewers might’ve missed. From the get-go, it’s apparent that Kai Anderson (Evan Peters) has a lot of control over people. Once he forms his group of followers, he begins playing mind games to ensure they’re loyal and obedient.

The most gruesome attack isn’t on unsuspecting victims, though, but an attack on Anderson’s own follower, R.J. (James Morosini). R.J. participates in the murders and acts of violence, but it’s clear he’s reluctant to go through with the deeds. Anderson isn’t particularly fond of R.J., so to get rid of him, he orders the rest of the members to take him out. One by one, they aim a nail gun at R.J.’s head, which is one of the most visually and psychologically disturbing moments of the season. It’s brutal, and it’s obvious Anderson wants him to die slowly.

3 Roanoke: Dr. Elias Cunningham/Vloggers

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

There are quite a few things about Roanoke that don’t necessarily make sense, but it was a decent season. There’s no shortage of gore or violence in this season, and it’s obvious the creators of the show didn’t hold back. This is why it’s difficult to pinpoint one gruesome scene.

Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O’Hare) is a filmmaker and true crime enthusiast interested in the killings in the Roanoke house. He knows the dark history that lives inside and outside the home, but he ends up on the slab himself. He isn’t found until later, but not before the Polks have amputated his leg and eaten it. He is later bludgeoned to death.

On an equally as disgusting note, a blogger named Sophie Green (Taisa Farmiga) and her friends dare to walk around the woods during a Blood Moon. After a series of escapes, Green and her friends are captured by the creepy colonists and are sacrificed and burned at the stake. This seems pretty normal for AHS, but the scene is utterly horrific.

2 Apocalypse: Michael Langdon’s Sacrifice Scene

The Most Intense Death On Every American Horror Story Season Ranked

By the end of season one’s Murder House, the fate of Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) was unknown up until Apocalypse. His true destiny was revealed, and even though he had a choice to choose between good and evil, he chose the Antichrist life. Langdon’s upbringing was sad, and he was an outcast from day one, but when he decided to engage in a ritual, it was obvious where he was headed. To begin the initiation-type process, several disciples of Satan presented themselves at his home.

Even though the scene could’ve been much worse, the scene is considered one of the most disturbing in AHS history. Miriam Meade (Kathy Bathes) and the rest of the group performed a sacrifice that included a young girl’s heart. It’s more psychological than gruesome but still very intense.

1 Hotel: Gabriel

The most gruesome and hard to forget scenes of the entires series happened in Hotel. It’s not a secret that hotel guests never leave the Hotel Cortez once they’ve crossed the lobby’s threshold, and when the hotel takes them, it’s not an easy death. In the very first episode, the shocking scene happens when Gabriel (Max Greenfield) checks in.

After using drugs in his room, he believes he’s having hallucinations. In reality, The Addiction Demon (Alexander Ward) has come out to play. To put it semi-lightly, the Demon does incredible internal damage to Gabriel. He’s viciously attacked by the creature and is basically left for dead. Although the entire act isn’t shown, the scenes that are included are haunting. Afterward, Gabriel is sewed into the hotel bed by Sally (Sarah Paulson) and manages to escape in the next episode. Though he’s taken to the hospital, he, unfortunately, dies. Gabriel’s time on the show was short but impossible to forget.
