The Most Unlikely Heroes Who Have Spent Time in Arkham Asylum

Since debuting in the pages of Batman comics in 1974, Arkham Asylum has grown to have a significant impact on the DC canon. Not only has it become an easily recognizable symbol within the comics, but it has also sparked a popular video game series, several cinematic appearances, and it serves as the essential backstory for one of DC’s favorite characters, psychiatrist-turned-villain Harley Quinn. While it’s typically been Gotham’s most chaotic characters filling the rooms in Arkham, plenty of heroes have also been admitted at the asylum.

The unlikely list begins with somewhat of an antihero: Deadshot. Though originating as a villain, Deadshot is an antihero in several of his iterations and definitely doesn’t feel like the kind of guy that would be in Arkham, since the asylum is typically reserved for those who are incredibly dangerous and mentally unstable. When Deadshot did arrive on the steps of Arkham Asylum, he had been transported from Blackgate Penitentiary, which typically houses non-metahuman villains.

While Deadshot is more of a gray area between villain and hero, a lot of total heroes have been admitted, too. Adam Strange is a key example. The science fiction superhero who went from archaeologist to being transported to Rann via Zeta-Beam has also spent time in Arkham. This happened in the DC: New Frontier universe. He was admitted into the asylum as one of the many who were suffering premonitions of The Centre’s coming in a plot on Earth-21 featured in DC: The New Frontier #4.

Even Gotham’s own heroes have spent time in Arkham. Nightwing, for example, was admitted under the assumption that he was actually Pierrot Lunaire in Batman #678. Pierrot Lunaire is a member of the International Club of Villains, which is the very team that ambushes Nightwing within the issue. He narrowly escapes a lobotomy to serve as bait for Batman during his stay at the asylum.

Another frequent Batman star, Zatanna, also stayed within Arkham. In 2001, Zatanna was featured in JLA: Black Baptism #2. Within the issue, she is seemingly on bed rest as Felix Faust tries to coerce her into using her magic abilities to read a spell for him while she’s at her weakest. Luckily, Batman bursts into the room (as he often does in Arkham) to save the day.

These four characters seem like unexpected guests for a building designed to house the mentally ill villains of the DC universe, but Arkham Asylum has had some unexpected guests beyond heroes. While Arkham famously houses most of DC’s baddest it has also housed villains like the Condiment King in Birds of Prey #37, so a few heroes getting admitted doesn’t feel like the silliest thing that’s happened to the institution.
