The Legend of Korra opened up the Avatar Universe when it was first introduced, but what are the MBTI® personality types of the main characters?

According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI for short, there are 16 personality types and to find out your own, all you have to do is take a short introspective test. We encourage you to try it if you haven’t already. Who knows, you might just found out something fascinating about yourself.

Or, you can do what we did and apply the MBTI to your favorite fictional characters. It’s taxing work, but it’s also tons of fun. Legend of Korra is packed with interesting characters and we couldn’t help but take a peek into the heads of Team Avatar, their allies, and enemies.

KORRA: ESTP (THE ENTREPRENEUR)

When we’re introduced to little Korra she’s showing off her bending skills and yelling at the top of her lungs “I’m the Avatar!”, which tells us that Korra loves being at the center of attention — a defining characteristic of ESTPs. Entrepreneurs are passionate, inspiring, natural-born leaders with the drive to get out there and do whatever needs to be done, and we see this in Korra constantly throughout the series.

Korra was also shown to be pretty stubborn, sticking to her beliefs at all costs, as it is often the case with ESTPs. Entrepreneurs often struggle with sticking to the rules, however, and loath hardship through the boring process of learning — something Korra can certainly relate to.

ASAMI: ISFJ (THE DEFENDER)

Sensitive but with excellent analytical abilities; reserved but with superb people skills — ISFJs can be difficult to read. Defenders are generous, they easily make connections, and often go above and beyond the call of duty. Asami’s kindness and altruistic nature can be seen especially in her interactions with Korra and her father.

Loyal and trustworthy, you won’t find an ISFJ sitting idly when there’s a worthy cause to be finished, which is something Asami constantly displayed. Even going against her father to stand up for what she believes in. Relying on common sense and personal experiences, ISFJs make excellent problem-solvers. And just how many times have Asami’s inventions saved Team Avatar?

MAKO: ISTJ (THE LOGISTICIAN)

The most prevalent personality type, the ISTJs are defined by their integrity, practical logic and sense of duty. Logisticians feel at home in regulatory bodies and military, much like Mako found his place with the Republic City Police force. Armed with sharp minds, Logisticians love facts, which makes Mako an excellent police officer.

Mako’s stoic and aloof personality is what established him as the Tall, Dark and Brooding archetype, but Logisticians typically struggle with displays of affection. Characterized by their blunt approach and difficulty to express emotions, ISTJs may appear distant, but they’re known to develop strong loyalty and commitment in their relationships. We see this in Mako’s protectiveness of Bolin and his friends.

BOLIN: ESFP (THE ENTERTAINER)

Craving the spotlight, Bolin pursued a career in pro-bending and acting. Revelling in the attention and luxury, Bolin is what we call the Entertainer. The ESFPs are characterized by their desire to socialize, put on a show, and try something fun and new. We see all of these traits in Bolin whose high-spirits and a great sense of humor easily drew the attention of others, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Bolin is also shown to be compassionate and possess a strong desire to help others, which is typical of ESFPs. Entertainers are selfless and jump at the chance to help others without expecting anything in return. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Bolin put himself on the line for his friends and he always did it with a smile.

AMON: INTJ (THE ARCHITECT)

The charismatic and mysterious leader of the Equalists, Amon radiated self-confidence from start to finish. As an INTJ, Amon abhorred rules and traditions, believing that everything should be open to questioning and change. For example, the position of benders. Amon’s misguided desire for what he believed to be justice led him to pursue his ideal of equality at all costs.

Calculating and manipulative, Architects go about achieving their goals with chess-like maneuvering. Amon managed to amass a vast army of supporters, plan and execute his schemes with utmost efficiency, and always stay one step ahead due to his proactive and logical thinking. Which isn’t surprising considering that INTJs are the most strategically capable personality types.

VARRICK: ENTP (THE DEBATER)

Varrick’s eccentricities often disguised his business acumen, sharp wit, and largely benevolent nature. As an ENTP, Varrick enjoys mental sparring as it gives him the opportunity to effortlessly flaunt his quick wit and knowledge. However, while Varrick certainly never lacked ideas and had no difficulties coming up with elaborate plans, he’s always had to rely on someone else to actually do the thing.

The so-called Debaters are known for taking great pleasure in brainstorming while avoiding doing the grunt work at all costs. That’s where Zhu Li comes in. Debaters excel at harnessing their natural abilities. Varrick’s intellectual independence and vision proved invaluable to Team Avatar.

JINORA: INFJ (THE ADVOCATE)

Advocates are defined by an inborn sense of idealism and morality. However, they’re far from idle dreamers. INFJs are people who are capable of taking concrete steps to achieve their goals and change the world for the better. Even at a young age, Jinora displayed a great amount of courage and determination, willing to exchange her soul for the well-being of the world.

Advocates tend to be soft-spoken, but when it comes to fighting for what they believe in nothing will stand in their way. Reserved and studious Jinora acted with calmness and surprising maturity in times of crisis. The determination and passion of an INFJ make Jinora the ideal person to right a wrong.

KUVIRA: ENTJ (THE COMMANDER)

Characterized by a ruthless level of rationality, using their drive and sharp minds to achieve their goals, ENTJs are thus called Commanders. Charismatic, confident and projecting authority, Commanders are natural-born leaders. That sound like anyone we might know from Legend of Korra? Say Kuvira?

Relentless in reuniting the Earth Kingdom, Kuvira pursued her goal with the “ends justify the means” attitude. She stopped at nothing — not even sacrificing her own fiancee — and refused to display any emotion, which ENTJs see as a sign of weakness. While mostly calm and composed, Commanders can become hypersensitive and emotional if someone provokes them or questions their competence and authority, as was the case with Kuvira during the final battle.

BUMI: ENFP (THE CAMPAIGNER)

Being the only non-bender in your family can’t be easy to deal with. In order to prove he’s just as capable as his siblings, Bumi adopted a wild and determined personality. Free-spirited and often reckless Bumi is an ENFP, also known as the Campaigner. His extroverted nature makes him the life of the party. But make no mistake, ENFPs are very compassionate, emotional and sensitive, despite what their flamboyant actions might suggest.

Though Bumi may play the fool at times, he’s a brave commander who cares deeply about his family and wishes nothing more but to make his father proud. Once he became an Airbender, this Campaigner’s empathy and courage only burned brighter.

OPAL: INFP (THE MEDIATOR)

Mediators are true idealists, dreamers if you will. Intent on finding good in everyone and making things better, INFPs hold a powerful inner flame and passion, even though they sometimes come off as reserved and shy. Opal at first exhibited shyness to Team Avatar, though she was quick to offer them a helping hand.

After all, Mediators are guided by a sense of honor, morality, and virtue. Opal puts a lot of value in honesty, being true to oneself, and believing in others. Her family is very important to her and she seeks to inspire compassion and kindness in the estranged sister Su and Lin with her altruism and idealism.
