The New Captain America Is Everything Steve Rogers Would Hate

The new Captain America seen in Marvel’s The Falcon & the Winter Soldier is everything Steve Rogers would hate if he were still alive in the present MCU. John Walker has been chosen by the U.S government to be the new Captain America after Sam Wilson decided to give up the shield, despite the fact that Rogers himself gave it to him in Avengers: Endgame. However, Sam gave up the shield thinking that it was to be displayed at the Captain America memorial exhibit at the Smithsonian, not taken out of its glass display case almost immediately and handed to someone who doesn’t uphold the same ideals as Steve Rogers.

Now, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are in a predicament in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode 2, “The Star-Spangled Man”. This new Captain America continually tries to team up and join forces, but the entire situation is one that neither Sam nor Bucky can get behind, and for good reason: the core motivations behind Walker becoming Captain America is everything Steve Rogers rejected, which is what truly made him a genuine Captain America in the first place. Furthermore, neither of them are very comfortable with the idea of Walker taking the place of their most trusted friend.

Essentially, John Walker is less of a new and genuine Captain America, and more of a new model of the Star-Spangled Man the government tried to turn Steve into in the 1940s. While Walker follows orders and smiles for the cameras, Steve rejected all of that to do what he thought was right on his terms, working alongside those he trusted to protect the world and make it safer regardless of the cost or personal consequences.

John Walker Is What Steve Rogers Rejected In The 1940s

The New Captain America Is Everything Steve Rogers Would Hate

After Steve Rogers received the Super Soldier serum during WWII in Captain America: The First Avenger, HYDRA murdered the serum’s creator Abraham Erskine, making Rogers the only Super Soldier the US government had. Because of this, Rogers wasn’t taken to the front lines and was instead turned into Captain America, the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. Rogers became the government’s new face for their propaganda campaigns, having him put on shows, sign autographs, and speak to the American people about buying bonds to help the war effort.

However, it wasn’t until the 107th infantry was caught behind enemy lines that Rogers had the opportunity to do what he was originally made to do, venturing out into the battlefield and fighting the good fight. In doing so, Rogers turned his Captain America identity into a genuine hero for the US forces, and he would continue to do so for the rest of World War II until he was frozen in the arctic after defeating the Red Skull.

In contrast, John Walker has been recruited to be the government’s flawed version of Captain America, sending him on a press tour with the grand fanfare of Captain America’s original theme music, waving and smiling to the crowds, signing action figures, and speaking to reporters in interviews. Instead of being that genuine hero that Steve Rogers was, John Walker is simply the new Star-Spangled Man persona that Rogers rejected.

New Captain America’s Ideals Are Very Different To Modern Steve’s

Likewise, despite the fact that the government is allowing Walker to go out into the field in The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, the motives couldn’t be more different from Rogers’ own. While Steve tried to follow the government’s orders when he was thawed out in the present, the prevalence of the government’s corruption such as with HYDRA’s infiltration of SHIELD in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Solder convinced him that he was better-suited working solely with the Avengers and allies he could implicitly trust.

However, the emergence of the Sokovia Accords in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and the desire for government oversight over the Avengers motivated Rogers to resist the new legislation, going on the run with those who agreed with him such as Falcon, Black Widow, and Wanda Maximoff. Together, they chose to do what they believed was right and keep people safe on their own terms, even if that put them at odds with the governments of the world.

This is the opposite of Walker’s new Captain America. While he claims that he wants to be the best Captain America that he can be, the caveat is that he can only be as good as the US government allows him to be. John Walker was chosen for his exceptional service as a soldier to the US military, and his new role as Captain America is just an extension of his continued service. He’s still under the direction of oversight of the US government, and they tell him where to go and who to help according to their agendas, all of which Steve Rogers was vehemently against.

Why The New Captain America Is So Different

Basically, John Walker’s Captain America is what the U.S government originally wished Rogers would have been: a hero they could direct and control to further its interests and those of the country. However, Rogers has always sought to fight for American ideals. He rejected the intended identity that came from the US governments of the past and present, choosing instead to forge the Captain America name and iconic shield into a symbol that stood for truth, justice, and freedom (no matter how high the price).

Unfortunately, this concept is something that John Walker is unable to achieve with his current state as a people pleasing, smiling and waving government operative. That’s not the truth of who Captain America really is. It means something to wield the shield, and it’s doubtful that John Walker will ever be able to ascend to Steve Rogers’ level to honestly earn it as Marvel’s Falcon & The Winter Soldier continues on Disney Plus.
