The New SpiderMan Betrays the Promise of Miles Morales

The return of Ben Reilly as Spider-Man is an interesting and welcome change in the status quo for the Amazing Spider-Man title. However, it leaves some troublesome questions surrounding Miles Morales. For a long time, Miles has been positioned as an official Spider-Man, most often implied to be the one who would completely take over if Peter Parker gave up the name. But the recent and upcoming issues of the Spider-Man: Beyond saga seem to imply a distancing of Miles from the title.

In the Clone Saga storyline of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Miles’s suit is damaged and he decides to use a new costume, which was designed by artist Chase Conley. Miles has always set himself apart from Peter Parker with his distinct costume choices – the same way Ben Reilly has – so this makes sense for the character. But even so, Miles’s new suit is so vastly different from any mainstream Spidey suit seen before that it almost looks like a different IP when compared with Ben’s new suit. Then again, Ben Reilly’s costume changes were seen as pretty radical back in the ’90s Clone Saga as well, so perhaps the artists just wanted each Spider-Man to rock a new suit. Intriguingly, the concept behind Miles’s suit isn’t even that different from Ben’s Scarlet Spider outfit (in that they both feature sweatshirts and fewer web patterns). However, it doesn’t help that Marvel’s promotional material for the Beyond saga show Ben being forced to hunt down Miles by the Beyond Corporation, forcing Miles and Shift to go on a crusade against the company.

In one way, this is great. Miles will be seen defending his right to bear the Spider-Man name, and maybe the struggle will even end in his favor. But on the other hand, the fact that Miles will have to defend it is strange. It illustrates a lack of respect for the character in-universe – the idea that he isn’t really considered Spider-Man to begin with by the people around him. Even in The Amazing Spider-Man #75, when Ben first tells Peter that the Beyond Corporation has made him the new “official” Spider-Man, Peter gets oddly defensive about having to “share Spider-Man,” despite the fact that Peter has been sharing Spider-Man for years. It’s almost as if Peter forgot to acknowledge Miles.

The New SpiderMan Betrays the Promise of Miles Morales

Marvel has received some criticism with its All-New line of comics for giving temporary focus to a more diverse range of heroes, but now seemingly sliding back to the white cast of A-list heroes. This criticism is compounded by the cancellation of both Champions (a series with a racially diverse cast) and Guardians of the Galaxy (which featured many LGBTQ+ characters). While it is clear that Marvel isn’t just shoving aside Miles, the fact that his position as Spider-Man is being threatened by a literal genetic copy of his white mentor is a pretty big red flag.

Ultimately, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. Miles is a very popular character, and it is comforting that Marvel still has a plan for him during the Spider-Man: Beyond saga. Maybe there is a possible resolution where he can reconcile with Ben Reilly and the two can act as Spider-Man together. However, if Marvel were to decide to simply edge Miles Morales out, it would be a huge betrayal both for a great character and the promise of his legacy.
