Whether you watch the film during the spooky season or during the festive period, there’s no denying that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a tremendous movie. With a unique atmosphere and characters that are easy to connect with, this brilliant, dark blend of Halloween and Christmas has truly become beloved throughout time.

While there was once rumors and speculation about a sequel to this great Disney movie, they never ended up becoming reality. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a bunch of other movies which are perfect for any Jack Skellington fan to enjoy. Whether it be because of the tone, the characters, or story, there are plenty of other fantastic films that tick similar boxes to this creepy classic.

10 The Addams Family (1991)

Dark in tone and setting but also incredibly fun and uplifting at the same time, The Addams Family ticks all the boxes that The Nightmare Before Christmas does. Whether it’s the original live-action or the more modern animated tale, this story is one that fans will really enjoy.

Much like Jack Skellington, this family simply doesn’t fit in or feel like they belong. It’s a movie about acceptance, but there’s certainly lots of fun and torment to be had on the road to that discovery, which makes this movie very enjoyable. The sequel, The Addams Family Values, may feel like a bit of a retread but it’s still just as fun and charming as the original.

9 Corpse Bride (2005)

With a very similar dark and eerie tone, Corpse Bride is a perfect movie for any fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas. This is another stop-motion musical (although the songs aren’t as strong) and just like for Jack Skellington’s adventures, Tim Burton has a major role to play here. This time around, he directs the stop-motion feature instead of merely producing it.

This movie has a big focus on the romantic side, which is something that gets touched on between Jack and Sally in Nightmare but isn’t the central focal point. Here, that’s exactly what it is, and seeing the romantic issues take place in this setting makes for a great movie.

8 James & The Giant Peach (1996)

This is another stop-motion movie produced by Tim Burton and helmed by Nightmare director Tom Selick. Unsurprisingly, James and the Giant Peach has a lot of similarities to The Nightmare Before Christmas. While it is a fun and exciting story, on the whole, this movie still manages to take a slightly darker twist throughout.

Based on the book by Roald Dahl, this fascinating movie brings his story to life and creates countless compelling characters. There is a great adventure to be had here, and for those with a keen eye, Jack Skellington can also be found making a cameo appearance.

7 The Black Cauldron (1985)

While The Nightmare Before Christmas does technically come under the Disney umbrella, it wasn’t actually the animation giant that created the film. However, Disney was certainly were responsible for The Black Cauldron, which is arguably the studio’s darkest animated movie to date.

The fact The Black Cauldron relies heavily on the darker storytelling all while being a really fun adventure movie makes this a great film. There’s plenty of exciting characters and creatures to be discovered in this underrated animation. Unfortunately, The Black Cauldron’s initial disappointment at the box office made Disney averse to making more similarly dark films.

6 Monster House (2006)

Another slightly spooky and scary children’s movie is Monster House, which turns an entire home into the monster itself. Rather than just having a haunted house, this movie turns the house into its own character and that creates tons of excitement throughout the film.

The three main characters have to work together in order to set the house free of its problem, but that’s easier said than done. The owner, Mr. Nebbercracker is just as grumpy as the house itself, which leads to some fun moments and a heartwarming end.

5 Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit (2005)

When it comes to stop-motion, Wallace & Gromit features are considered to be the gold standard. Their fun-loving adventures are always exciting and they utilize the technology to the absolute fullest. Normally, their movies are full of adventures and are lighthearted, and this one is no different in that regard.

However, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit does have a slightly darker tone. With Wallace accidentally becoming the monstrous were-rabbit when an experiment goes wrong, he begins to terrorize the village. It’s up to Gromit to save the day.

4 Labyrinth (1986)

Labyrinth movie is unique in its own way, much like The Nightmare Before Christmas. With the charisma and charm of David Bowie meeting the incredible puppetry of Jim Henson, Labyrinth is another cult classic that holds up just as well today as it ever did.

The movie has plenty of spooks and strangeness with the Goblin King, and it also features some brilliant music that any movie fan will relish in. There’s a great plot and compelling characters, all set in a spooky environment, which makes this one that people will love.

3 Hocus Pocus (1993)

Though it was received mildly when it first hit cinemas, Hocus Pocus is another movie like The Nightmare Before Christmas that is now considered to be a true classic, especially during the Halloween season. This film has a great blend of darker moments mixed with pure comedy and warmth.

The three witches are both dastardly and hilarious, and that mix is exactly why fans would enjoy this movie. They are charismatic and easy to love, and with some great music and a compelling story, this film is a tremendous one.

2 Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Much like The Nightmare Before Christmas, this movie does a tremendous job of turning characters that initially seem scary into warm and friendly monsters. Hotel Transylvania showcases a different side to the classic monsters such as Dracula and Frankenstein, especially what they’re up to when they’re not scaring anyone.

Seeing them want to try and live a normal life with their hotel is a fun twist on what is normally expected from these characters, and it creates a really engaging and funny movie. The fact that this ended up spinning into a popular franchise just shows how compelling the characters themselves are.

1 Coraline (2009)

Much like Jack Skellington, Coraline (based on the Neil Gaiman book of the same name) is looking for something else out of life. She’s fed up, which is mainly due to how her parents treat her, and when she decides to go on an adventure and winds up in a different world, things really start to take a turn.

With many of the characters having buttons for eyes (it makes sense in context), it certainly ticks the creepy and unique element that The Nightmare Before Christmas has. This movie has plenty of dark moments which is what makes it stand out, all while still being full of heart at the same time.
