The Ninja Turtles Only Love One Food More Than Pizza

At this point it is an established fact that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles love pizza, an element introduced to fans in the ’80s cartoon and cemented in nearly every form of media since. While the Turtles love a good New York slice, an alternate depiction of mutant ninjas proves that they actually love breakfast cereal even more.

In 2017’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Funko Universe by Caleb Goellner and Nico Pena, Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael are enjoying breakfast with their favorite brand of cereal, Rice Shreddies. When Michelangelo looks into the box to get the prize, he finds that there is nothing in there, so the Turtles spring into action and investigate their lack of the promised decoder ring at the bottom of the box. They come to find out, they are some of the only ones without the ring as Shredder and Krang were planning on using them to send a mind control signal to people all around New York. The Turtles burst into the cereal factory that has been taken over by the villains and find out what they are up to and successfully stop them, a mission that starts all because they don’t get the prize at the bottom of the cereal box.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles literally fought an entire battle against an army of Foot Clan soldiers along with the monstrous duo of Bebop and Rocksteady over nothing more than cereal. While the Turtles love pizza, they have never risked their lives for it. Obviously there is an added layer of passion over breakfast cereal than the Turtles have over pizza, proving that they have a greater love for the boxed breakfast goodies than they do for a hot slice of pie. While their love for pizza has been well established, and their newly proven passion for cereal is now on fans’ radar, there was a time in the TMNT lore where they didn’t care for either of those tasty foods.

In the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird published by Mirage Studios, the Turtles were not a fun-loving group of mutated turtle teens and were instead a much darker group of serious ninjas. The original comic was gritty, black and white, and filled with murder and violence. It wasn’t until the launch of the television series and the toy line that the Turtles became geared towards kids and their happy-go-lucky attitudes kicked in, with their love for pizza as an inclusion into that change in personalities.

A side-by-side comparison between Eastman and Laird’s original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the referenced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Funko Universe shows that the two have virtually nothing in common. While there may be some love lost for the Turtles by fans of the original series, the progression of their media presence is part of what makes the team so timeless and inclusive for people of all ages. With that progression comes inevitable change, having the Turtles go from not having any kind of favorite food, to having an overwhelming love for pizza, and finally to prove that their true passion food is apparently cereal. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles prove that they love cereal more than pizza after literally fighting a battle over the breakfast food with no such passion shown for pizza.
