Is The Conjuring spinoff The Nun 2 still happening? Following the success of his directorial debut Saw in 2004, James Wan struggled with his follow-ups. While they’ve since developed cult followings, both Dead Silence and Death Sentence struggled at the box office. Wan went back to his roots with 2010’s Insidious, proving himself a modern horror auteur, and the movie – just like Saw – spawned a franchise. His follow-up The Conjuring was another huge success, with the period horror following the investigation of a haunting house.

The Conjuring’s blend of slow-burn suspense with highly effective jolts – in addition to the surprisingly sweet romance between Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Ed and Lorraine Warren – helped launched a new series. Counting the most recent entry The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, there are currently eight entries in the saga. The Nun from 2018 served as a prequel to the events of The Conjuring 2 and followed the origin of the titular demonic entity, AKA Valak.

Bonnie Aarons’ Nun was a late addition to The Conjuring 2, with Valak originally portrayed as a more traditionally demonic-looking creature. Reshoots led to the more iconic Nun taking its place, and a new horror icon was born. The Nun itself received very mixed reviews but turned a healthy profit, but is a sequel happening?

The Nun 2 Was Confirmed As Being In Development In 2019

During a chat with EW in 2019, The Conjuring franchise producer Peter Safran stated a sequel was being developed for The Nun 2, which will apparently have “a really fun storyline.” He also stated for the potential follow-up that “I think there is an inevitability to another Nun movie.” Akela Cooper was later hired to pen the movie’s screenplay. Sadly, there are no plot details on the sequel, and whether it would follow The Nun or pick up after Valak’s apparent defeat at the end of The Conjuring 2.

The Crooked Man Is Also Being Developed

Valak is a busy demon, as it was confirmed another spinoff based on its Crooked Man form from The Conjuring 2 was also in the works, with Wan himself having provided a story treatment. The project was apparently developed as something of a dark fairytale, but updates on the movie have gotten quiet since 2018, seemingly due to The Nun overshadowing the creature,

The Nun 2’s Status Is Unknown

Given both the success of the original and the enduring popularity of The Conjurvese itself, The Nun 2 feels almost certain. It’s likely the project and any other spinoffs were put on the back burner to focus on The Conjuring 3, and with that project done, there should be more activity on the spinoff side of things soon. The movies tend to follow each other in a relatively tight release pattern, so if The Nun 2 is next, a release date of no later than 2023 is likely.
