Michael Scott proved many times in The Office that he was the father figure of Dunder Mifflin. Here’s how he looked after Jim, Pam, Erin, and Co.

Before Michael Scott fell in love, started a family with Holly and left Scranton for good, his first family was with Dunder Mifflin. Coming from a broken home with no siblings, Michael has always wanted oodles of kids with a wife that loved him. As we know, however, Michael’s social awkwardness prohibited this from happening for quite some time. This led him to put all his effort (if we can even call it effort) into the paper business, making his co-workers his family.
Looking back on The Office’s nine seasons, we can’t help but notice that Michael held on to a fatherly role to his employees. While his job may have been Regional Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton, his personal role was to look after the wellbeing of his co-workers. Something a father does.
10 HE TOOK ON THE PARENTING ROLE FOR ERIN
We met Erin in the fifth season but so many of us wish we met her sooner. She really lights up the room when she walks in and added such a fun element to the females in the office.
One of the first things we learn about Erin when she takes over for reception is that she grew up in foster care. Her biological parents gave her up for adoption and she was never adopted. Due to a loss of her own family, she searched for that at Dunder Mifflin. She found a motherly figure in Phyllis and a fatherly figure in Michael.
When she started dating Gabe, she sought after Michael’s approval of him, which surprised Michael. But as we see, all she wanted was a dad to approve her decisions.
9 LETTING JIM MAKE HIS OWN MISTAKES (NO MATTER HOW BAD THEY WERE)
Jim is a smart man with a lot of potential. We’ve seen it time and time again throughout The Office’s nine seasons. And while Michael’s job looks like a joke, Jim had a real taste of reality when he took over for Michael in “Survivor Man.”
To prove himself to the office, Michael decides to go off into the wilderness to prove he can survive. Jim is now the manager in charge, who decides to combine everyone’s birthdays so there isn’t more than one party in the month. Jim soon finds that was a horrible idea and when Michael returned from the wild, he listened to Jim’s blunders and giggled in relation. It was like a father-son conversation after a long workday.
8 HE SUPPORTED PAM WHEN SHE QUIT DUNDER MIFFLIN TO WORK FOR THE MICHAEL SCOTT PAPER COMPANY
Pam and Michael have a unique relationship. Pam acted as Michael’s protector in a lot of ways (i.e. protecting him from embarrassing himself even more than he already does). Likewise, Michael acts as a father-figure to her (even though she never needed one).
When Pam quit Dunder Mifflin to join Michael on his quest to start a new paper company, she encouraged Michael to chase after his goals. Later on, the roles were reversed and Pam had a minor panic attack about her choice but Michael picked her up and had a very mature conversation with her about the past being the past and it was time to move forward.
7 AND HE WAS ONE OF THE ONLY ONES TO GO TO HER ART SHOW
When Pam and Roy try to date again after calling off the wedding, she starts to take her art more seriously. She entered an art show and was extremely proud and anxious about her work being on display.
On the night of the art show, she invited the whole office to come. Oscar came with his ex-boyfriend Gil, who proceeded to belittle her work behind her back. The only other person to show their support was Michael. And not only did he praise her talent but he bought one of her pieces: a portrait of Dunder Mifflin’s office building.
6 HE PRACTICALLY GAVE DWIGHT AWAY AT HIS WEDDING TO ANGELA
Fans felt mixed emotions when Michael decided his time in Scranton was over. We were proud of his new adventure with Holly but were going to miss his crazy antics at the office. Overall, he made the right decision.
After he left in season seven, we didn’t see him again until the very last episode of season nine when he made a rare appearance at Dwight and Angela’s wedding. Michael took over the role of “bestest mensh” and we saw tears fill his eyes with emotion. Something a father would do.
5 HIS OBSESSION WITH HIS CO-WORKERS BEING HIS FAMILY
There were not many things that drove Holly and Michael apart, but when Holly told Michael his co-workers were his subordinates — not his family, Michael had a big problem with this.
Aforementioned, his desire for a big family was strong and his co-workers were as close to a family as he could get. He constantly referred to his employees as his own and that showed in his day to day interactions with them.
4 ALL THOSE PARTIES, CELEBRATIONS, AND DUNDIE AWARDS
Michael didn’t throw countless celebrations and parties because he loves to party, he threw them because he wanted to celebrate his co-workers and their achievements. That’s exactly why he created the Dundie Awards. It was a time to honor those who worked so hard for him. But he wasn’t about to give them awards pertaining to their work efforts.
He was awarding those and their own personal achievements. Something a parent would love to do. This kind of thinking is further shown in The Office’s Christmas episodes. He goes out of his way to buy the best gifts and throw the most lavish parties because Christmas with them is better than Christmas alone.
3 HIS DESIRE TO WALK PHYLLIS DOWN THE AISLE
In the episode “Phyllis’ Wedding,” Michael (somehow) is asked to assist with Phyllis’ wedding to Bob Vance. Phyllis’ dad is in a wheelchair and she needed Michael to wheel him down the aisle next to her.
Michael saw this as an important opportunity in any young woman’s life. He saw himself as the second father of the bride. As most fans know, his shining moment was taken from him but before he was kicked out of the wedding reception, he really did try to give Phyllis away as any father-figure would.
2 HE HELPED JIM AND PAM’S WEDDING HAPPEN
If Michael had it his way, he’d be the one giving Pam away at the altar and he’d also be the wedding planner. Luckily for Pam and Jim, they organized a very relaxed and lowkey wedding in Niagara Falls, hoping people wouldn’t make it.
In the midst of passion and wedding planning, Pam found herself pregnant, which meant she would have to hide her bump during her wedding weekend, thanks to her conservative grandmother. But after Jim let the cat out of the bag, Michael took it upon himself to save Pam’s grandmother leaving. His dedication to helping Pam and Jim (his “kids”) with their wedding/pregnancy debacle was very paternal.
1 WANTING TO BE THE COOL MANAGER WHILE ALSO NEEDING TO BE THE ENFORCER
Throughout nine seasons, there were a handful of times where Michael had to let someone go or had to prepare for closing a branch. When it came to upsetting his co-workers, Michael became overwhelmed. He even wondered if there was a way to fire someone but still be friends with them.
This inner conflict between being a bad cop and a good cop is something many parents deal with when raising their kids. You want to be firm but you also want to be someone your kids (or co-workers) can go to. Michael struggled with this greatly.
