The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

We met salesman Andy Bernard when Jim transferred from Scranton to Dunder Mifflin’s Stamford branch. Right off the bat, we learned that he was a Cornell graduate who talked a big game and apparently had an anger management problem. Once the two offices merged, Andy was transferred to Scranton where he was on the series until the final episode.

Throughout The Office, Andy bragged about his family’s name, his wealth, and his education. However, his entire demeanor was a contradiction. For someone who was as connected and successful as Andy, his poor attitude, angry breakouts, and poor sales records showed the real Andy (or should we call him Nard Dog?). Over the years, we learned more about Andy’s upbringing and family life but there were a few red flags. Take a look below.

10 WHAT IS ANDY’S DAD’S REAL NAME?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

In the fourth season at the iconic goodbye party for Toby, Jim was planning on proposing to Pam. He paid extra for fireworks and was ready to pop the question when Andy took the stage and decided to propose to Angela on the same night. Oddly enough, Andy’s parents were there (why did they drive to Scranton from Connecticut to say goodbye to their son’s co-worker?) and he introduces them as “Andrew and Ellen Bernard.”

This insinuated that Andy was named after his dad. But in season eight’s “Garden Party,” his dad is introduced as Walter Bernard, which is also the name of his youngest brother. He later explains that his family named him Walter after his father but once his younger brother was born, thy thought he fit the Walter mode more, so they changed Andy’s name.

9 AND DID HIS DAD REALLY CHEAT ON HIS WIFE WITH HIS SECRETARY?

Three seasons after meeting Andy’s parents at Toby’s goodbye party and two seasons before the garden party, Andy is seen trying to woo Erin by getting excited about International Secretaries Day. Besides having a crush on Erin, Andy seems to be celebrating secretaries for an entirely different reason — because he was thankful for his own stepmom who used to be a secretary (his father’s secretary if you catch our drift). But… if he had a stepmom, why was his father with his birth mother at Toby’s party and the garden party?

8 AND IS ANDY’S BROTHER A RESULT OF HIS INDESCRESSIONS?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

If Andy had a younger brother named after his father and he also had a stepmom, could Walter Jr. be a product of his father’s indiscretion with the secretary? Perhaps Walter Sr. left Andy’s mom for his secretary, only to go back to her and later found out his former wife was pregnant?

Or maybe after Walter Sr. found love with his secretary, he decided he wanted to name that son Walter Jr. as well, leaving his first wife infuriated, so she changed her son’s name to Andy? There are a ton of Reddit theories about Andy’s connection to his father’s favorite son.

7 WAS THAT REALLY HIS PARENTS ON THE NIGHT HE PROPOSED TO ANGELA?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

In “Goodbye Toby,” Andy proposes to Angela because it was the perfect night and he couldn’t think of a better night. His parents were even in the audience. When the camera zooms over to Andy’s parents, they’re more upbeat than we saw them in “The Garden Party” and they were played by different actors. Some fans of the show suspect Andy hired two people to act as his parents at the party, to show his co-workers what an amazing family he had. But that wouldn’t make sense, because wouldn’t Angela ask what the heck happened to his parents when she met the real Bernards?

6 HE CLAIMED TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE BROTHER AND YET WE ONLY MET ONE

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

Andy is a natural liar. He lies about everything so long as it makes him look good. In reality, it doesn’t make him look good at all. His lies make him look full of himself and entitled. When he has a crush on Erin, he would have done anything to make her smile, even when they were just friends.

So, in one episode when she asks Andy if he was good at puzzles, he says “Are you kidding, it’s all I did every summer while my brothers were out sailing.” Oddly enough, we only ever hear of one brother… And why wouldn’t Andy (who loves to sail) be sailing with them?

5 IF HIS FAMILY NAME WAS SO IMPORTANT, WHY WAS HE WORKING FOR A FAILING PAPER COMPANY?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

Andy Baines Bernard comes a very wealthy and well-off family. His dad is apparently someone important and it’s not known if his mom every worked or had to work. Andy is very smug when it comes to his family’s name and his time at Cornell, but if he had all the connections in the world then why was he a struggling paper salesman at a failing company in Scranton, PA? With a Cornell diploma and a dad with big connections, surely Andy could be anywhere else than Dunder Mifflin.

4 IS ANDY REALLY A TRUST-FUND BABY?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

Sadly, newcomer Nellie and Andy didn’t hit it off right away. Nellie took came to Scranton to help out and she took Andy’s job title from him while he was in Florida trying to win Erin back. When Andy got his job back from Nellie, the two butted heads for the remaining of his time on the show.

At one point, Nellie says “Andy Bernard, the rudderless trust fund child-slash-middle manager, whose incompetence is emblematic of a declining American economy.” But was he really a trust fund baby? And if he was, wouldn’t his inheritance be in question once his dad left the family and took everything? Where did his family get their money anyway?

3 HOW IS HE BAD AT GOLF?

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

Andy loves to boast about his Connecticut upbringing. He wears preppy clothing brands, spends his summers on the coast, and attended a major Ivy League institution. He’s even said that he was “brought up in an Ivy League lifestyle.” Now, if you ask anyone in that world, the Ivy League lifestyle would most certainly mean playing golf. But in the fourth season when Andy joins Jim on a golfing business outing, he is completely filled with blisters from practicing golf all night because he was horrible at the sport. Growing up in that lifestyle and not playing golf seems quite suspicious.

2 PROTESTANTS, SLAVES, MOSES, JFK, AND THE TITANIC

The Office 10 Times Andy’s Family Made No Sense

Who can forget the episode where Nellie lies about Andy being related to the former First Lady, Michelle Obama. Andy believed her and bragged about the relation, but when his co-workers explained the historical backlash that could complicate that theory, Andy backtracks. That’s when we learn that his family used to transport slaves — they never owned them. What’s even more outlandish is how Andy has such an important family. He’s claimed to have come from a long line of WASPS, family members who’ve worked alongside Moses, his grandmother was a passenger on Titanic, and his other grandmother was a lover of former US President JFK. How, how, how, Andy?!

1 DID ANDY’S DAD EVEN GO TO CORNELL?

I wish we knew more about Andy’s father’s education and job title because it would explain a lot. In”Branch Wars,” Andy says that he wasn’t even fully accepted into Cornell. He was wait-listed and his father had to donate a building just to get him accepted. Later in “Costume Contest,” Andy explains that the building named Walter Bernard Hall was named after his father. But did his dad even attend Cornell or did he just have that much money that Cornell couldn’t deny the funding from a non-alumn?
