The Office Teased Dwight & Angela’s Relationship In The First Episode

Dwight and Angela were a match made in heaven on The Office, and the pairing was actually teased in the show’s first episode. Love was often in the air at the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch throughout The Office’s nine-season run. Jim and Pam might be viewed as the primary couple to come out of the sitcom, but Dwight and Angela were just as important. The pair’s romantic relationship played out over the course of the sitcom but it may have started earlier than first believed.

Dwight and Angela first embarked on a secret romance to avoid being scrutinized by their coworkers. It was assumed that the fling began sometime during The Office season 2. Over time, Jim, Pam, Phyllis, and Ryan became aware of the relationship. Even when Angela became engaged to Andy and later married to the Senator, she and Dwight carried on their romance. The child that Angela had with the Senator turned out to be Dwight’s and after years of a “will they or won’t they” situation, the couple finally embraced their feelings and ended up together.

Even though the interactions between Dwight and Angela ramped up in season 2, their secret romance was hinted at in The Office pilot episode. When Dwight was first introduced into the series, he was singing “The Little Drummer Boy” much to the annoyance of Jim. As many viewers will remember, Angela had stated that “The Little Drummer Boy” was her favorite song. During the season 3 episode, “A Benihana Christmas,” Dwight even proudly held the microphone for Angela as she happily sang the holiday classic.

How The Little Drummer Boy Connects Dwight And Angela

The exact timeframe of when Dwight and Angela started seeing each other was never confirmed. With Dwight singing Angela’s all-time favorite song in the premiere episode, it seemed very likely that their relationship kicked off well before the sitcom began. The fact that it wasn’t the holiday season during the pilot episode hinted that Dwight was influenced by another outside factor. He was also noticeably happier in the pilot than he was usually presented, especially while working at his desk. Sure, he was always an odd guy but it wasn’t common for him to be singing at his desk. Dwight’s recent encounters with Angela may have put him in that cheerful mood.

There were a number of other clues in The Office that teased Dwight and Angela’s relationship prior to the season 2 revelation. Angela stated on multiple occasions that romances, particularly office romances, should be nobody’s business. In the season 1 episode, “Hot Girl,” Dwight tried to flirt with the purse saleswoman Katy (Amy Adams) but was sadly shot down. After the incident, the camera panned to Angela as if the crew wanted to see her reaction. Thankfully, after nine seasons, Dwight and Angela were given a happily ever after type of ending.
