There were many emotional moments in The Office, but only a handful brought fans to tears.

There have been a lot of incredibly funny moments in The Office, both the UK original and the US remake. The original version ran for such a short amount of time, that we didn’t get a chance to emotionally involve ourselves in the lives of the characters. On the other hand, the Steve Carell-starring remake gave us many seasons to really wrap ourselves up in their lives.
As such, there is a lot of emotion threading through the show. We’ve ranked the ten most tear-jerking moments The Office ever provided us.
10 Kevin: When He Won Back His Parking Space
While Kevin is arguably the funniest character on the show, he has a relatively heart-breaking back story involving his ex-fiancé Stacey, with whom he has a daughter. In one shot, he explains that after she left, things didn’t go very well for him.
When he wins his parking space back, his genuine delight is really heart-warming.
9 Erin: When She Wanted Michael’s Support
Despite most of the members of the cast either not liking Michael or basically just thinking he is quite annoying, Erin arrived and found comfort in Michael. He didn’t really notice or understand this, so when she went to him for support and advice, he basically rejected her request. Her heartbreak is tough to watch, even if Michael steps up to the plate eventually.
8 Andy: When He Stays Behind At The Theatre
In season seven, Andy was a mainstay of The Office. He was about to become its central figure and had recently won over audiences who found him very divisive at first. As a result, it’s really sad to see him backstage after performing Sweeny Todd, looking really disappointed with himself. He does treat us to a sing-along a few minutes later though.
7 Dwight: When He Reads The Recommendation Letter
It’s genuinely difficult to feel any sympathy towards Dwight due to his extraordinary level of arrogance and self-importance. He pretends to have almost no emotional capacity whatsoever, but when he lets this slip, it’s quite impactful.
Michael writes him an incredibly complimentary recommendation letter, and when he slowly reads it for the first time to the camera and takes in every word with real emotion, it’s pretty touching.
6 Pam: When She Told Jim How She Felt
Pam spends a lot of the first episodes of the show semi in love with Jim, and semi clinging onto a relationship with Roy that no one thinks should exist. When she finally gives up the act and admits to Jim that he was the reason she called off the wedding, it’s almost impossible not to grin (and cry), even if we saw it coming a mile off.
5 When Dwight Proposes To Angela
The only character with as much blunt, unemotional arrogance as Dwight was Angela. It didn’t seem like either of them would ever realize this, however, but as the show aged, they finally got together, and Dwight proposed. He might have done it through a megaphone looking strangely angry, but his words and very much real: “this expresses how much I love you.”
4 When Jim Cuts His Own Tie
It’s almost as though Jim and Pam were exclusively created in order to provide gifs that can be captioned ‘couple goals.’ When Jim and Pam get married, it’s all quite emotional from every angle.
However, when Pam’s veil rips and Jim cuts his tie in half so that they’re on an even playing field, we really feel the connection between the two.
3 When Jim Comforts Dwight
He might have kicked off the show by putting Dwight’s stapler in jelly, but Jim really did care for him deep down.
When Dwight and Angela break up, Jim is on hand to provide some advice and understanding in a situation he is all too familiar with. It’s nice to see them take a break from fighting to provide some very real, raw emotion.
2 When Michael Comes To The Art Show
Michael is a sympathetic character throughout the show. He might be an idiot with no understanding of social situations who pretty much end up doing more harm, but he really does mean well deep down.
When Pam finally puts on an art show, no one from the office attends except Michael. His incredible excitement about her talent is very cute, and her face when he simply has to buy one is priceless.
1 When Michael Left
There’s a bit of a double meaning with this particular moment. He left to pursue his true love, Holly, but it’s still sad for all the friends he left behind, especially considering he left a day earlier than planned in order to avoid a sad farewell.
The goodbye he shares with Pam at the airport is particularly hard to watch. The double meaning comes when you also remember that this is where the decline of a once fantastic show really ramped up.
