The Office Why Creed Was Almost Written Out In Season 2

Creed Bratton was almost forced out of The Office during the show’s second season. Creed, whose last name is also Bratton (like the real-life actor), served as a recurring character throughout the first two seasons before being bumped to a regular in season 3. The character worked as the Quality Assurance Director at the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch and spent a very brief time as the regional manager.

Every character on The Office had their quirks, but Creed was one of the more eccentric figures in the workplace. He was a former hippie with a very mysterious past due to the questionable comments he would throw out from time to time. There was plenty of evidence to support that his name wasn’t really Creed and he went under multiple identities. He was also pretty terrible at his job, but he sure made for some amusing moments throughout the series.

Creed’s first big moment on the show came in the season 2 episode, “Halloween.” Michael was supposed to fire an employee due to budget cuts and he waited until the last day of the month to do so. The final decision came down to Creed and another employee named Devon. In reality, The Office’s creator, Greg Daniels, was firing one of the two actors. Bratton spoke about the incident on the Office Ladies podcast hosted by his former costars, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. The series wanted the storyline included, but that meant writing out one of the two background characters. The rest of the cast had written contracts as regulars or recurring stars so they weren’t options. Bratton didn’t end up losing his job at Dunder Mifflin or in real life, but it was a nerve-wracking experience.

Creed Bratton Had One Chance To Convince The Office To Keep Him

Rather than make the decision before shooting, the producers decided to film both men being fired by Michael to see which one felt like a better fit. This meant that Bratton had one opportunity to convince the series to keep him. To make matters even more interesting, the scene happened to be the first time Creed had real lines in the series. In the episode, Michael did technically fire Creed, but he then convinced his boss that Devon should be the one to go. Michael was easily manipulated and ended up axing Devon, solidifying Creed’s spot on the series until the very end.

The actor who played Devon, Devon Abner, wasn’t out of a job too long since he already had a theatre contract waiting for him. The decision also convinced the writers and producers to give Creed more screentime which benefited The Office when the series started to dive into the lives of the supporting characters. As a nod to this moment, Dwight ended up hiring back Devon in The Office series finale after Creed faked his death to flee his past crimes.
