Red Dead Redemption 2 has a very similar feel and appearance to cowboy game Gun, and it would’ve been a better sequel with Gun’s gold mining feature.

The One Feature Red Dead Redemption 2 Should Have Stolen From Gun

The Red Dead Redemption series is now one of gaming’s most popular, but old west-themed video games were once much less mainstream. Red Dead Redemption 2 and its predecessor took a lot of inspiration from both Red Dead Revolver, the first Red Dead game, and Gun, a 2005 open-world Western. However, there’s one great Gun feature left out of both Red Dead Redemption titles: the ability to mine for gold with a pickaxe.

Gun is a third-person shooter in a similar vein to Red Dead Redemption, following the adventure of a lone gunslinger on his journey to avenge his father’s death. While Gun precedes Red Dead Redemption, the aptly named game does not precede the original Red Dead Revolver. Both games, however, pioneered a genre of video games in the same vein as the movies the games were based on – Westerns. Notably, Gun differed from Revolver in that it’s more of an open-world action RPG, similar to the Redemption series.

Gun was largely open-ended, with story and side missions encouraging exploration similar to Morrowind, a Bethesda title from four years prior. Stats such as shooting and melee could be leveled up, collectibles could be found, and other interesting distractions littered the game – one of which was the ability to use a pickaxe to mine gold from ore veins.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 Should Have Included Gun’s Gold Mining

Players could come across these ore veins scattered across Gun’s world and, after purchasing a pickaxe, could chip away at them for gold. These veins earned players $10 in-game each time they were mined, and there were 44 gold veins to be found, so it was a decent way for players to earn in-game currency (plus an achievement waiting at the end of the veins).

Red Dead Redemption 2 missed the boat by not including a feature such as this. It would pair easily with other parts of the game world, such as the prospector NPCs players can encounter panning for gold, along with the gold bars players can find scattered around. The pickaxe would also have offered another melee option to players, allowing them to attack people from stealth like a prospector defending their claim. Mining for gold would have offered another source of income to the player, as well as a collectible that offered a measurable gain beyond minor stat boosts or cosmetics, like other collectibles such as the legendary animals. In short, mining was a golden opportunity missed by the developers at Rockstar Games.
