The Order 1886 A PS5 Sequel Is What The Game Deserves

When it released on the PlayStation 4 back in 2015, The Order: 1886 had a mixed reception. The third-person, cover-based shooter had high production values, and was visually impressive for the time, yet had its fair share of criticisms. It seemed poised to launch a new PlayStation exclusive series, and even though that never came to fruition among The Order: 1886 sequel rumors, the game still deserves a PS5 sequel.

The biggest critique lobbied against The Order: 1886 was its amount of gameplay. It was a full priced, AAA game on release, and wound up being a rather short experience, usually taking less than 10 hours or so. Within that short play time was a hefty quantity of cutscenes as well. The game was even presented in a widescreen format, with a cinematic aspect ratio completed by black bars across the top and bottom of the screen. The gameplay that was packed into the game wasn’t particularly deep, but it had a solid base and there was plenty of room for a sequel to capitalize on what The Order did well.

What The Order: 1886 presented with its movie-like feel was a fascinating alternate history of London at the end of the 19th century. Monstrous, half-human creatures resulted in vampires and werewolves being locked in a centuries-long battle against humanity. In the game’s distant past, the Knights of the Round Table discovered a substance which made them essentially immortal, and an eternal conflict between the Order and the half-breeds commenced. The game depicts the Order during the Industrial Revolution, equipped with weaponry designed by Nikola Tesla, investigating recent Lycan attacks and anti-government movements. A lot of care was put into crafting the world of The Order: 1886 by its studio, and the IP deserves another shot at creating a more complete game in that universe.

A Sequel To The Order: 1886’s Just Needs More Gameplay

Early in 2020, a NeoGAF user claimed they had seen a vertical slice of what many others suspected was a potential sequel to The Order: 1886, but there has yet to be any official word on if it truly exists. The most promising thing about the tease is that the world of The Order might not be going to waste. A sequel has the opportunity to address all the missteps of the original, and deliver a compelling evolution of its gameplay. Cover-based shooters seem few and far between these days, and a sequel could fill a somewhat open niche, competing directly with the likes of Gears of War projects, even though the NeoGAF user, OsirisBlack, claimed it would be coming to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

If the same relative visual fidelity of The Order: 1886 was recreated for a sequel, it could be a truly impressive game graphically. There was nothing necessarily wrong with the cinematic approach to the original, it just needs more gameplay between its many set pieces. The Order: 1886 managed to deliver an interesting hybrid of bombastic action and tense, horror-like elements. All of the building blocks are there for a sequel to The Order: 1886, and all it needs to do is recognize the original’s shortcomings and not retread those mistakes.
