The Origin Of The SpiderMan Pointing Meme

Some may not recognize the cartoon that the meme originates from, especially considering that Spider-Man has starred in more cartoons than any other Marvel character. This particular cartoon, however, is the wall-crawler’s very first animated series. Titled Spider-Man, the series ran on ABC for two seasons before going into syndication for its third and final season. Consisting of 53 episodes in total, Spider-Man featured Paul Soles as the voice of the titular superhero. The series featured supporting characters and villains from Spider-Man’s earliest adventures, such as J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant, Vulture, Scorpion, Electro, Sandman, Green Goblin, Rhino, and more.

Like many cartoons, episodes of Spider-Man’s first and third seasons were split into segments, so that each episode was broken up into two stories. In the second segment of Spider-Man season 1, episode 19, appropriately titled “Double Identity,” Peter Parker goes up against an actor-turned-criminal named Charles Cameo. Cameo impersonates Spider-Man to steal art treasures, but is interrupted by the real Spider-Man, who lands in front of him. The two point at each other, and it’s this shot that’s been the subject of hundreds of memes.

Each meme has a different humorous interpretation of what the two could be saying to each other (since both are wearing the same costumes and striking the same poses). Here’s what is actually being said. Cameo points at Spider-Man, and says “that man is an imposter!” to which Spider-Man replies, “That man is the imposter!” Afterward, a fight breaks out and Spider-Man easily defeats and captures the thief, much to the disappointment of J. Jonah Jameson.

It’s been used by fans, celebrities and even politicians to make funny comparisons between people that either seem oddly similar or are engaged in the same activity. As long as fans keep coming up with unique ways to have fun with the image, it and other popular Spider-Man memes on the internet can be expected to remain relevant.
