The Original Evil Batman Returns in DCs Biggest Twist Yet

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Dark Nights Death Metal: Multiverse’s End #1

Dark Nights: Death Metal has been full of dark versions of Batman. However, before the emergence of the Batman Who Laughs, arguably the worst and darkest reflection of Batman, there was another. Someone else who had long represented the darkest parts of Batman living on Earth-3: Owlman of the Crime Syndicate. Now, Owlman has returned in Dark Nights Death Metal: Multiverse’s End #1, and does something completely unexpected.

In the issue from writer James Tynion IV and Juan Gedeon, The Green Lanterns have been trying to unify heroes from all across the remaining worlds left in the Multiverse, trying to destroy the tuning fork towers that are providing Perpetua with all kinds of power and crisis energy. However, Green Lantern John Stewart was captured by Owlman himself, while his compatriots in the Crime Syndicate Ultraman and Superwoman fought the other heroes. This is because Owlman has thought things through, and has his own agendas. He knows what the stakes are, and is now trying to determine what the best course of action should be for him personally. Should he kill Stewart and his allies, ending what he sees as their obnoxious primary Earth self-importance, or should he help them save the Multiverse so that he might continue existing as he has?

Owlman also reveals that he’s leaning towards helping the Green Lanterns due to the simple fact that he is extremely jealous of the Batman Who Laughs. For a long time in the history of DC Comics, Owlman was the primary “dark reflection” of Batman, just as his allies in the Crime Syndicate were evil versions of the other members of the Justice League. As he tells Stewart, Owlman is not happy with the status quo change.

Owlman’s pettiness is a big factor for why he’s considering helping the Lanterns. Eventually, John Stewart also gives Owlman the evidence he needs to make a decision, showing him that that with every change, shift, and correction to the Multiverse, a version of Owlman has always been brought into existence in some way, shape, or form. Armed with the knowledge that Owlman will always survive, he frees Stewart and quickly kills Ultraman and Superwoman. Not only that, but Owlman gives the Green Lantern and their allies time to escape before he blows all of the towers that he rigged himself weeks ago, cutting off power to Perpetua. Thanks to his newfound confidence that a version of him would live again when the Multiverse was restored, this Owlman had no problem sacrificing himself.

It’s a pretty wild turn of events and twist for Dark Nights: Death Metal, one that even Stewart has a hard time grasping. If it hadn’t been for the actions of the original Dark Batman, the heroes wouldn’t have been able to save the day, and the multiverse might have never been restored, remaining under the control of Perpetua, The Batman Who Laughs, and his legions of other Dark Batmen. Here’s to Owlman, who remarkably helped save the DC Universe as fans know it.
