The Originals The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Episodes According To IMDB

Last year, one of the most consistently strong shows on the CW Network came to an end. After 5 seasons and 92 episodes, The Originals wrapped up a successful run. It began as a spin-off of the wildly popular The Vampire Diaries and followed the lives of the Mikaelson family.

The show also introduced several other characters who went on to become fan favorites. One reason this show was so beloved was that characters like Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah became popular on The Vampire Diaries and viewers were excited to see more from them. We’re here to celebrate the best and worst of The Originals, by looking at the highest- and lowest-rated episodes according to IMDb.

10 Best: “A Streetcar Named Desire” (9.4)

One of the best things about television shows set in the same universe is getting the chance to see crossovers. Look at the CW Network’s Arrowverse for a good example of this. The Vampire Diaries and The Originals had a similar situation in Season Three’s fourteenth episode, “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

The Vampire Diaries was in Season 7 when this episode rolled around, which saw Stefan Salvatore arrive in New Orleans. He showed up at the perfect time and his past link as both friend and foe played a key role in helping Freya, Marcel, and Hayley. There’s also some strong drama involving the Davina/Kol relationship which marked the culmination of the Trinity arc.

9 Worst: “They All Asked For You” (8.4)

We begin with the only episode from Season Two to be on the “worst” section. It’s a shocker to find it placed here because Season Two was such a strong effort from the showrunners. However, the 8.4 score proves that the weakest installments of the series are still pretty great. This episode focused on Rebekah and the boy she was inhabiting.

“They All Asked For You” shed light on the witch’s life and let us know that she had a complex past. Rebekah had to partner with Marcel and she received help from a pack of vengeful witches from her brother Elijah. There was also drama between Klaus, Hayley, and Jackson over how to best protect Hope. Mikael returned in this episode as well.

8 Best: “Fire With Fire” (9.4)

The Originals The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Episodes According To IMDB

Whether it’s The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, or even Legacies, shows in this universe share a common trend. The penultimate episode of a season is often one of the best. That was the case with Season Two’s “Fire with Fire.”

Klaus once again found himself at odds with his family, which always makes for a compelling episode. Here, Klaus partnered up with Dahlia and forced Hayley and her pack to be stuck in wolf form each day that isn’t a full moon. Characters lost important people, tough calls were made, and there was a ton of action that set things up for an explosive finale.

7 Worst: “Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea” (8.3)

The Originals The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Episodes According To IMDB

When you’re talking about the worst episodes of a show and the ratings you’re finding are above an 8.0, you know the series was well received. The Originals was remarkably consistent, not seeing the great dip in quality that a lot of series do. That means that the fourth episode of Season Five, “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” ranks near the bottom.

This episode saw Klaus’ frustration grow at the inability to find the kidnapped Hayley. As usual, it sent him on a rampage. He took hostages from supernatural factions, killed a wolf and witch, and took daylight rings from vampires. Freya also got to spend some quality time back in Mystic Falls.

6 Best: “The Battle Of New Orleans” (9.4)

Back to another penultimate episode being one of the best. “The Battle of New Orleans” came just before the first season ended and remained one of the most action-packed installments of the entire series. It was one of those cases where everything came to a head and converged to give us something special.

Klaus and Elijah looked to save the werewolves. Marcel rallied a vampire army in an attempt to take down the Mikaelsons. Davina pondered resurrecting Mikael. Hayley went into labor. There wasn’t a single moment of this episode that didn’t cause your pulse to quicken.

5 Worst: “‘Til The Day I Die” (8.3)

Who doesn’t love a wedding episode? Apparently, fans of The Originals. The 8.3 score for Season 5, episode 11 was still high, but not on the level of even the most middling installments of the series. Regardless of how this hour was received, seeing Freya and Keelin tie the knot was sweet.

Kol officiated the wedding and Elijah arrived in the nick of time to walk his sister down the aisle. Elsewhere, Klaus turned to Davina for help with Hope’s ailment, Vincent decided to leave New Orleans, and Declan looked into the city’s secrets.

4 Best: “The Bloody Crown” (9.6)

Technically, the Season Three finale is tied with the top episode on our list. However, this ranks slightly below because it had fewer votes (2,266 to 1,422). The Originals teased us for several seasons about the rivalry between Marcel and Klaus. This episode finally delivered, with Marcel gaining enhanced original powers making him stronger than even Klaus.

Marcel put Klaus on trial in one of the most emotional scenes of the series. The Mikaelsons were cursed and were all on the verge of death. However, Klaus and Freya came up with a plan to link Klaus’ life to theirs. He allowed himself to be stabbed with a blade that was considered a fate worse than death. As he suffered for years, his family was put into a sleep that kept them protected until a cure was found.

3 Worst: “We Have Not Long To Love” (8.2)

The Originals The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Episodes According To IMDB

The ninth entry into the show’s final season turned out to be the second-lowest rated. “We Have Not Long to Love” centered around the purist vampire storyline that saw a violent group do everything in their power to take down hybrids like Klaus, Hayley, and Hope.

The problem was that the purist vampire community never came across as big enough baddies. The Mikaelsons faced some serious problems in the past and this group didn’t live up to that. Hope’s storyline, trying to bring her family back together, also didn’t work quite as well as the writers probably hoped.

2 Best: “From A Cradle To A Grave” (9.6)

The Originals The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Episodes According To IMDB

It’s fitting that, when you have the penultimate Season One episode rank high, the finale is even better. The best, in fact. “From a Cradle to a Grave” remains a stellar way to end a season. With Hayley’s baby finally on the way, she was kidnapped by the witch coven looking to kill the child. That put her, Klaus, and Elijah at odds with the witches in a war that was the highlight of the strong episode.

While the side plots involving Davina, Cami, and Marcel are worth your time, it’s the way this edition wraps up that truly makes it great. After saving baby Hope, Klaus understands how much danger she’s in. In a heartbreaking yet sweet moment, he opts to bring the baby to Rebekah for safety.

1 Worst: “When The Saints Go Marching In” (8.1)

The lowest-rated episode in The Originals history is the series finale. It wasn’t a bad way to wrap things up, as evidenced by the score still clocking in above an 8.0. It just wasn’t what everyone hoped for. Klaus absorbed the Hollow and planned to sacrifice himself to rid the world of it.

Fans were treated to emotional callbacks and great character endings. Unfortunately, the final moments left a sour taste as Elijah opted to die alongside his brother. Some fans questioned the decision, as Elijah’s death was unnecessary and took away another parental figure from Hope’s life.
