Private Division, the 2K Games publishing label behind hits like The Outer Worlds, has announced partnerships to put out the next games from the creators of Ori and the Will of the Wisps and OlliOlli. Designed to support smaller studios and their big new ideas with an AAA push, Private Division already has an impressive lineup of past titles. Besides the impressive The Outer Worlds from Obsidian, they’ve published V1 Interatactive’s Disintegration, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey from Panache Digital Games, and the Kerbal Space Program series. With another round of developer partnerships, we can expect big things from the label in the coming years.

Private Division is a unique entity in the gaming industry, taking advantage of the resources of a huge publisher like 2K without invoking the name. It follows along with the 2K model, which has also published games under Rockstar and 2K Sports for decades. The closest parallel might be EA’s EA Originals program, which puts out independently minded games under a separate EA name. Still, 2K seems to push their Private Division titles more than EA, and the games themselves seem to aim higher in terms of scope. With these established studios on board, we could see a big upgrade from their past work.

Earlier today, Private Division announced its second big lineup, partnering with Roll7, Moon Studios, and League of Geeks. Moon Studios partnered with Microsoft for its first decade, creating the Ori duology and anchoring the Xbox One first-party lineup for a time in terms of platformers. The studio has already announced work commencing on an action RPG, which will be a change from their past work. Studio co-founders Thomas Mahler and Gennadiy Korol had this to say regarding their creative process:

We attribute our success to the ‘iterative polish’ process we use at Moon Studios, and we’re continuing that style of development to create a new game that rises above anything we’ve created thus far.

Here at Private Division, our team is always looking for new and unique projects to share with our community and to the world. We’re happy to announce that we’re teaming up with three new studios: @moongamestudios, @LeagueofGeeks, & @Roll_7! Read more: https://t.co/RuGzYR3r7U pic.twitter.com/JRL0w48fFl

League of Geeks is an Australian studio known for creating Armello, a fairy-tale digital board game with RPG elements. Studio co-founder Blake Mizzi stated that the new partnership allows League of Geeks to grow the team as they start work on a new intellectual property. Last but not least, Roll7 is the esteemed team behind the 2D Tony Hawk-like, OlliOlli. They’ve also released Laser League and Not A Hero in the past, and look forward to applying their “flow state gaming” philosophy to a whole new project in the future.

After finding great success with games like The Outer Worlds, Private Division has found three excellent teams to work with in the future. While the company announced that the games wouldn’t be ready to launch until at least 2022, that shows that the studios will go beyond their current ambitions to deliver new projects worth waiting for. This developer-focused publishing model is a great way to bring in talent to a larger system without a full acquisition, preserving the independent spirit that makes studios like this shine in the long run.
