The Promised Neverland Can Be Amazons Stranger Things

The Promised Neverland has the potential to be Amazon’s answer to Stranger Things. Based on the manga series by Kaiu Shirai, The Promised Neverland came to worldwide prominence with the debut of an anime series in 2019. The gripping first season is set almost entirely within a mysterious and unsettling orphanage, and features a group of children attempting to uncover the conspiracy behind their missing friends. Combining adventure, suspense and horror, a second season is due to air in early 2021 and the manga series comprises almost 200 chapters.

After gaining mainstream popularity both in Japan and across the world, a live-action The Promised Neverland TV series has been green-lit by Amazon Prime, with Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse) as director and showrunner. The Promised Neverland is just the latest in a long line of anime adaptation announcements. In recent months, Netflix have confirmed production on a One Piece TV series, while Sony are working on a live-action One-Punch Man movie. Given the shocking track record of western live-action anime adaptations, there’s an understandable skepticism surrounding The Promised Neverland, but the series is brimming with possibility, and could even become Amazon’s own Stranger Things in terms of its themes and potential for success.

Compared to other anime projects in the pipeline, The Promised Neverland is by far the best suited to live-action. Translating the likes of One Piece or One-Punch Man using real actors will be a challenging task, as both are so far removed from reality and rely on comedy that only anime can get away with. By contrast, The Promised Neverland is a relatively grounded story. Driven by its characters, The Promised Neverland leads with horror influence and slow-build tension rather than outlandish fight scenes and larger-than-life transformations. This style lends itself far better to live-action, with the most fantastical elements being the monsters – and even they aren’t any weirder than the Demogorgon or Mind-Flayer from Stranger Things.

Monsters aren’t the only common thread between The Promised Neverland and Netflix’s hit 1980s pastiche. Stranger Things’ success is driven by a young and talented core cast, and the same will be true of The Promised Neverland. The main trio of Emma, Ray and Norman might need to be aged up a few years for Amazon’s series, but the youthful cast will undoubtedly be vital to the show’s fortunes. The central premise of The Promised Neverland also echoes Stranger Things; kids being smarter than the adults and uncovering secrets that the grown-ups around them are hiding. Just like in Hawkins, these secrets lead to a new and scary paranormal world for the young protagonists. The Promised Neverland certainly won’t have the 1980s influence of Stranger Things, and it’ll be a lot more sparing with its humor. Where Stranger Things’ brand of horror is rooted in genre classics, The Promised Neverland can be unflinchingly brutal. Some of the younger characters will be lucky to survive as far as episode 2.

While Stranger Things and The Promised Neverland certainly aren’t identical, they do share certain qualities and themes that helped Stranger Things become a runaway success. The Duffer brothers’ series became the foundation of Netflix’s original content drive and has been instrumental in cementing the widespread popularity of the platform. Amazon Prime has yet to deliver a series that gets the world talking in the same way, but The Promised Neverland has the potential to change that.
