America was riddled with problems—poverty, theft, murder. The country was on the brink of economic collapse until a political organization that called themselves the New Founding Fathers Of America (NFFA) rose to power and came up with a plan. One night a year, all crime, including murder, is legal for only 12 hours. Society must “purge” the anger and crime out of their systems for the good of the country… but is that really the answer, or are there more nefarious intentions behind the Purge?

Teeming with political commentary and gory horror fun, each installment of The Purge franchise has come with mixed critical reception, but still has a considerable fan following. It currently has four feature films, with its fifth currently in production, and a television series that ran for two seasons before its cancellation. Though the series is known for keeping it’s upcoming plots a secret, we do know that the fifth film is titled The Forever Purge, and is said to be the final installment of the franchise. It is presently slated for a 2021 release.

6 The First Purge (2018) – 5.2

The First Purge may be the fourth film, but it takes it all the way back to the beginning. Recently having come into power, The New Founding Fathers secretly plan to run a sinister sociological experiment on the communities of Staten Island: the very first Purge Night.

Highlighting how the Purge heavily disproportionately affects the poor and minorities, it begs the question: is that whole point of this? Despite scoring lowest with the critics and IMDb users, The First Purge is currently the highest-grossing movie in the franchise, and it made 137 million worldwide.

5 The Purge (2013) – 5.7

More of a home invasion thriller than a horror film, The Purge took a decidedly unique approach from the rest of the series. Rather than exploring the savagery of the outside world on Purge Night, the first film instead turns its focus inside to a single family.

After a bloody stranger finds his way to them for help, a well-off family become prisoners in their own home when a group of gleeful Purgers decide to make them their next target. Starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, the film only made around 90 million dollars worldwide, but it sparked a franchise that would continue for most of the next decade.

4 The Purge: Election Year (2016) – 6.0

Having survived a horrific Purge Night as a child, Charlie Roan grew up to become a successful U.S. Senator with aspirations for changing the world as she knows it. Currently running for President against a member of the NFFA, Charlie has hopes of putting an end to the deadly night once and for all.

The NFFA won’t back down without a fight, and Charlie finds herself a target because of her commitment to ending the Purge. Starring Elizabeth Mitchell and Frank Grillo, The Purge: Election Year further delves into the deep, political divide, and how far people will go to hold on to their rights… even if it’s the right to murder their neighbor.

3 The Purge: Anarchy (2014) – 6.4

Starring Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zoë Soul, and Kiele Sanchez, this sequel not only beat the original at the box office, but fans agreed that the characters and the storyline went far above and beyond its predecessor. The franchise learned from this film, and the rest of the movies have had a similar format of exploring the outside world on the night of the Purge, rather than going the home invasion route.

2 The Purge TV Show (2018) – 6.4

Making its debut on USA and Syfy in 2018, The Purge television series takes place between the first and the second movie and delves into the lives of various characters as they prepare for Purge Night.

Once again traversing topics such as classism, social violence, and government overreach, each character must decide what they are willing to do to survive the night and what they truly believe about the Purge. Though it is one of the most popular installments of the franchise, the series was canceled after two seasons.

1 The Forever Purge (2021) – To Be Determined

Very little is known about the mysterious fifth and final film of The Purge series. When is it set in the timeline? How will it connect to the other films? The ominous title sounds terrifyingly final, as if it is hinting at the end of the world, or at least the end of America.

The creator of the franchise, James DeMonaco, is slated as both the writer and the director, though he hasn’t directed a Purge film since The Purge: Election Year in 2016. Fans will just have to wait and see where this one goes!
