Pretty much from the moment Beth Harmon fully understood the game of chess, there was no one in the world who could beat her in the game. That is until she met Benny Watts. Benny was just as much of a chess whiz as Beth, and his experience and confidence gave Beth her first real loss in the game.

However, Beth and Benny developed quite a unique relationship over the course of The Queen’s Gambit, and it clearly veered into romantic territory a few times. So, here’s why they would have made a perfect couple, and why they’re better off apart.

10 Perfect Together: They Had Great Chemistry

Chemistry. Some people have it, some people don’t, but it’s a pretty essential aspect of any successful romantic relationship. And when it comes to Benny Watts and Beth Harmon, they had chemistry pretty much the instant that they met.

It’s only natural that two chess hotshots would experience a spark, but most of Beth’s other adversaries throughout the series didn’t have the same kind of chemistry with her that Benny did.

9 Weren’t A Match: They Didn’t Want To Be In A Relationship

By the time that Benny and Beth really developed a significant friendship, it didn’t seem like either of them were looking to get tied down to anyone else anytime soon. And clearly, the desire to actually be in a relationship is a pretty key aspect of being in a relationship.

Both Beth and Benny were at the most exciting points of their lives when they grew closer, so it was important for them to have as many experiences as possible and not be weighed down by a relationship.

Being a chess whiz is a pretty unique and unusual skill set, and the world of competitive chess is incredibly competitive.

It’s extremely rare for a chess player of Benny or Beth’s caliber to meet someone that can actually go toe to toe with them, and that’s why they make sense as a couple. They can understand each other in a way that pretty much no one else can.

Benny and Beth both know how it feels to be a nearly undefeatable chess champion, and they both love being at the top of the game. But, that seems like a pretty obvious flaw in any potential long term relationship between the two.

The fact that they’re both so competitive and that they’re both each other’s competition seems like a death knell for any romance between them.

6 Perfect Together: Because Benny Supported Her

Both Benny and Beth have a hard time losing, however Benny deserves a lot of credit for basically being such a good sport when it comes to being dominated by Beth.

Benny didn’t just take his losses to Beth on the chin, he actually went out of his way to help her and improve her game, even though in theory it would have damaged his own standing in the chess world to do it.

5 Weren’t A Match: Because He Was Too Accepting Of Beth’s Flaws

Any relationship that starts on a foundation of one person trying to fix another is probably bound to fail anyway, however, the fact that Benny seemed relatively blasé about Beth’s obvious substance abuse problems is a problem in itself.

Benny did encourage Beth to get herself together which is good, but he didn’t seem to do much more than that, and that wouldn’t have been healthy for either of them in a romantic relationship.

4 Perfect Together: Because They Shared The Same Passion

Most people are passionate about a least a few things in their lives, but few people are as passionate and dedicated to one single thing as Benny and Beth are to chess.

That single-minded focus would be very hard for any normal person to cope with in a relationship, so the two of them getting together and understanding how they both feel about chess and what it takes to be who they are would be good for both of them.

3 Weren’t A Match: Because They’re Players

From an outside perspective, it doesn’t seem like chess would be an edgy, cool, or wild business to get into. But Benny and Beth both lean hard into creating a mystique around themselves as top chess players.

That would be a lot of energy for both of them to deal with, and it seems like they’d ultimately come into conflict because of this mentality.

2 Perfect Together: Because They Were Equals

Obviously every chess match (or nearly every chess match) has a winner, so no chess player can truly be an equal to another. But Benny and Beth are about as close to equal as any players can ever get, which would make a relationship between the two easier.

If two players were in a relationship where one was always falling behind the other, resentment would clearly build.

1 Weren’t A Match: Because They Were Too Intense

Passion, drive, and achievement are all wonderful things, but a life that exists without anything besides those things is a fairly empty one.

Benny and Beth are a bad match together because they both need someone to pull them out of their singular focus every once in a while, and if they were a couple, they’d undoubtedly push each other even further into obsession.
