The Rock (Yes That Rock) Is Launching His Own Headphones

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has released over-ear headphones in partnership with JBL as part of Under Armour’s ‘Project Rock’. Project Rock is an ongoing partnership between Under Armour and the Hollywood star, with the company releasing workout apparel using The Rock’s likeness and trademarks including sneakers and sweaters. The deal between the two parties has been lucrative, being named the best celebrity sportswear partnership by research company Spotted. This should come as no surprise to fans of the wrestler turned actor who is world known for his intense workouts.

Celebrity partnerships have been a mainstay in the world of headphones for a long time. Beats by Dre, one of the most recognizable audio brands in the world, was started by hip-hop artist Dr. Dre, with other rappers Ludacris, 50 Cent, and The RZA all releasing their own personal brands of headphones over time. Typically, and predictably, the branded headphones each have a connection with famous musicians, but The Rock is a different story. What the actor lacks in terms of musical knowledge, he more than makes up for in fitness expertise, and these headphones are designed with the gym in mind.

The Under Armour Sport Wireless Train Project Rock have a tough exterior much like their designer, which is no surprise considering they are designed to be used in a physical environment where high durability is a must. They’re wireless of course and boast ambient noise cancellation and breathable fabric ear cushions so sweat doesn’t make your ears unbearably hot. The cherry on top is oversized external button controls for ease of use. So far these headphones appear to be perfect for a loud environment such as a gym or sports field. The headphones even comes with a 12-month subscription to MapMyFitness Premium, giving the Project Rocks out as some of the best over-ear headphones for fitness fanatics.

A Design As Solid As A Rock

However, if you are buying these headphones for audio quality there are superior offerings available for around the same price. The audio range for the Project Rocks is 20Hz to 20kHZ with amplified bass. For roughly the same cost, the Audio Technica ATH-M50XBT offers deeper lows and higher highs at 15Hz – 28kHz. Additionally, the driver size (the size of the actual speakers) of The Rock’s new cans is 40mm, smaller than the Audio Technica’s by 5mm. Additionally, the battery on these only lasts for 16 hours, much lower than most other headphones for around the same price. Audiophiles probably won’t find much use out of this product, but gym-goers and Rock superfans will surely find plenty to love.

Overall, these headphones are perfect for if you go to the gym often as the design is breathable, durable, and accessible with the size of the external buttons. However, if you aren’t planning on using these at the gym and just want some personal audio with great battery life and better audio quality, buy a good pair of headphones and listen to the Moana soundtrack.
