The Rocks Hobbs Is Still The Fast & Furious Series’ Best Antagonist

The Fast & Furious franchise has an abundance of interesting antagonists, but none of them compare to Dwayne Johnson’s hulking anti-hero, Luke Hobbs. 2001’s The Fast and The Furious pitted Brian O’Conner against Dominic Toretto, back when Brian’s allegiances remained solely with the LAPD and Dom was only a street racer. Although gang leader Johnny Tran was one of the most underdeveloped villains of the franchise, he helped Dom and Brian strike an unlikely friendship that became the heart of the Fast & Furious movies. Antagonists Carter Verone, Arturo Braga, Takashi, Hernan Reyes, Mose Jakande, Cipher, Brixton Lore, Jakob Toretto, and the Shaw brothers then posed increasingly bigger challenges to Dom and his family, but none with the same charm as Luke Hobbs.

Like Brian O’Conner, Luke Hobbs was introduced in Fast Five as a devoted enforcer of law and order who only wanted to apprehend Dom’s crew regardless of their heroic motivations. But after almost getting killed by Hernan Reyes’ henchmen, he chose to side with Toretto and let him escape. Since then, Hobbs has worked with Dom’s crew and even joined forces with Deckard Shaw, making a name for himself as one of the most popular characters in Fast & Furious.

Despite featuring villains that range from street racers to superhumans, the Fast & Furious franchise has few antagonists that break the mold. Most of them are greedy criminals with implausible plans, and their actions leave little space to root for them. Luke Hobbs, on the other hand, starts out as an agent of the Diplomatic Security Service who only wants to get the job done, only to realize that the so-called criminals he’s pursuing are much more effective in taking down the real terrorists. This change of heart allows Hobbs to let go of a tiny piece of his huge ego and learn to work alongside people he doesn’t fully trust. Hobbs’ character arc leads him to a life full of constant strife, but it stands out as one of the most compelling stories in the franchise.

Hobbs also possesses all the qualities a character needs to fit in the wild narrative of the Fast & Furious movies. He’s a human tank with peak combat skills. He’s contentious and charismatic. He has a natural chemistry with every character he meets and he manages to make the most outlandish situations seem like truly serious business. All this is courtesy of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who thrives in the action blockbuster genre. One antagonist who rivals Hobbs’ charm might be Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw, who was tasked with the monumental challenge of going from murderous villain to charming anti-hero, so it’s no surprise that both Luke and Deckard have a promising future as the protagonists of the Hobbs & Shaw movies.

Johnson’s Hobbs is sitting Fast & Furious 9 out, but his journey in the franchise seems to be far from over. Hobbs & Shaw introduced his Samoan heritage and confirmed Hobbs could bear Brixton, a superpowered terrorist. With crazier villains and even bigger threats coming to the Fast & Furious universe, Luke Hobbs may have a long road ahead of him in the near future.
