The Sad Truth About Pokémon Legends Arceus Regional Variants

The August 2021 Pokémon Presents event unveiled two brand-new regional variants for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, along with two regional evolutions. The Hisui-region forms of Growlithe and Braviary sport new designs and types, and both Stantler and Basculin will be able to evolve into entirely new Pokémon. Unfortunately for these creatures, Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ setting could prevent them from appearing in future titles, as they might be extinct.

Regional variants, first introduced in Sun and Moon, are new forms of Pokémon from older regions. Mimicking real-world adaptation and evolution, these Pokémon have changed over time due to their differing environments. By the looks of things, though, the environment Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ regional variants call home has long disappeared by the time the Hisui region becomes known as Sinnoh, explaining the new Pokémon’s absence from the original Sinnoh games.

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Hisui region seems to mainly consist of unsettled frontier, allowing Pokémon to roam the land, sea and air unhindered. Modern Sinnoh, as seen in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, has a number of industrial cities, and designated nature preserves like the Great Marsh are the region’s few uninhabited areas. Given these changes, perhaps the Hisui Pokémon variants are not seen in modern regions because the environment needed to cultivate them has not existed for a long time, driving them to extinction.

Hisui Regional Variants Could Return As Fossil Pokémon

Even if the Hisui regional variant Pokémon have gone extinct, however, there are still ways they can be implemented in future Pokémon games. Pokémon researchers throughout the series have developed technology that allows them to revive ancient Pokémon from fossils. Perhaps fossils of these new regional variants can be revived to bring them into the modern day. Alternatively, certain Pokémon have been able to undergo a process known as Primal Reversion, in which they draw on the power of a held item to transform into a more primeval version of themselves. This has so far been limited to the Legendary Groudon and Kyogre, but more Pokémon, upon learning the move Ancient Power, are imbued with the ability to evolve into prehistoric-looking forms, such as Mamoswine.

While players may have to accept the sad truth that the newly showcased regional forms are extinct, they should not lose hope of seeing these Pokémon again. There may be even more new Hisui Pokémon in Legends: Arceus, and Game Freak is unlikely to let them stay in the past.
