The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch stars an ensemble cast of investigators and scientists searching for the truth behind years of unexplained phenomena occurring on a 500-acre stretch of land in Utah. The docuseries follows the investigation into reports of paranormal activity on the ranch, including UFO sightings, cattle mutilations, encounters with shapeshifting beasts, and cases of mysterious injuries and radiation exposure.
Strange occurrences on the property were first reported in the 1960s by the family that lived there, but the lore behind Skinwalker Ranch is centuries old. According to local Native American legend, a Navajo curse was placed on the land of its enemies, the Ute tribe, that resulted in “skinwalkers”–dangerous, shapeshifting, werewolf-like creatures–roaming the ranch. While this story is historically unconfirmed, many locals have claimed they’ve had personal encounters with these creatures in the years since.

In The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch season 1, the research team witnessed UFO activity, an attack on the ranch’s alpacas, the sudden death and unusual decomposition process of a healthy cow, and they heard from an array of witnesses about their own bizarre experiences with paranormal activity on the property. One member of the team, astrophysicist Travis Taylor, came down with symptoms of radiation poisoning after exploring the ranch. Perhaps in season 2, investigators’ more invasive research methods may provide concrete evidence of what is really happening on Skinwalker Ranch. Here’s the team and their roles, explained.
Brandon Fugal, Owner
Brandon Fugal is the owner of Skinwalker Ranch. A prominent businessman, entrepreneur, and real estate developer, he has the necessary experience to own and operate the infamous property, as well as the means to fund the investigation. Since his childhood, Fugal has been interested in extraterrestrial and paranormal activity, so when he had the opportunity to purchase the infamous ranch in 2016, he did so. He bought the land with the sole intention of putting together an investigation into the bizarre events that have been witnessed there, hoping to unlock its secrets.
Travis Taylor, Aerospace Engineer & Astrophysicist
Dr. Travis Taylor is an aerospace engineer and author whose extensive work in the aerospace industry has included projects for NASA and the Department of Defense. He has a Ph.D.s in optical science and engineering and master’s degrees in physics, astronomy, aerospace engineering, and a background in electrical engineering, as well. Dr. Taylor joined the team at the start of the series with the purpose of providing scientific methods and his breadth of knowledge to the investigation.
Bryant “Dragon” Arnold, Head of Security
More commonly known as “Dragon,” Bryant Arnold is the head of security at Skinwalker Ranch. Having known owner Brandon Fugal for over 25 years, he is trusted with protecting the ranch as well as ensuring safety for the investigators through every step of the process. His opinions are highly valued and his background as a licensed, armed private security officer qualifies him to keep the property and everyone on it safe. As the voice of caution, he often provides the balance to Travis, whose scientific curiosity sometimes gets the better of him.
Thomas Winterton, Ranch Superintendent
Thomas Winterton, superintendent of Skinwalker Ranch, manages facilities, equipment, and maintenance of the property. He assists in the investigations and has unique insight based on firsthand experience with the unsettling paranormal activity that occurs there. Prior to the start of the series, Winterton developed a serious head injury while on the ranch that could have killed him, the cause of which is still unknown and of vital importance in the context of the investigation. He has a slight reoccurrence of the issue in season 1, which means both he and the team are ultra-cautious when it comes to his safety.
Erik Bard, Principal Investigator
Erik Bard is the team’s principal investigator and chief scientist. He is a physicist who has worked with owner Fugal on other scientific projects over the last decade. He leads the team’s investigations into the unknown, most significantly with his advanced surveillance system he installed across the ranch. While Travis is usually the scientist thinking up new tests and experiments to run and most often out in the field, Erik mans the operation from their base and keeps all the important equipment running.
Jim Morse, Ranch Manager
Jim Morse is the manager of Skinwalker Ranch. He is an entrepreneur and has a background in real estate development. Jim is less hands-on than the rest of the team in the day-to-day investigations on the ranch. However, his contribution involves bringing in outside experts and consultants when the team needs specialists to explain the paranormal activity. Perhaps his greatest value to the team is his connection to the Native American community in the area, whose insight is crucial in investigating the strange phenomena.
Kandus Linde & Tom Lewis, Ranch Caretakers
Kandus Linde and Tom Lewis are the caretakers of Skinwalker Ranch. Linde, an anthropologist, and Lewis, a technologist, live on the ranch and tend to the livestock. They monitor the activity of cattle and exotic animals on the ranch, which is an extensive and extremely important role as the animals act as biosensors whose behavior can shed a lot of light on the strange activity that occurs there.
