The Simpsons 5 Reasons Ralph Was The Stupidest Character In The Simpsons (& 5 Reasons It Was Homer)

The Simpsons is known for its ability to craft incredibly funny and loveable characters. The main character in the show is typically considered to be Homer Simpson, who is possibly the most famous person in TV history. Yet, Ralph Wiggum often provides solid competition for the title of the show’s funniest character. The two don’t overlap particularly often, but they’re both connected by their overwhelming stupidity.

We’ve looked back at the entire run of The Simpsons and have figured out five reasons why Ralph was the show’s stupidest character, as well as five reasons it’s the man at the heart of the show.

10 Ralph: He Glued His Head To His Shoulder

Ralph is known for his rather impressive ability to end up in a variety of sticky situations, and one of the most literal examples of this came when he actually stuck his head to his own shoulder while in school. As a young boy, maybe Ralph hasn’t quite learned what all of his school supplies actually do yet?

9 Homer: He Tried To Jump Springfield Gorge

Something even the most trained skateboarder in the world would never, ever do is attempt to jump across certain death without any safety equipment and obviously nowhere near enough speed to get across. Homer Simpson isn’t even a skateboarder, he’s an overweight man who has displayed no ability in this field and should theoretically get about a meter across the gorge before falling to his death. Luckily for Homer, all he ended up with was a series of life-threatening injuries, though, of course, he ultimately survived.

8 Ralph: He’s Really, Really Bad At Small Talk

“So, do you… like stuff?” Ralph asks Lisa, the girl of his dreams. We can let him off somewhat, as he is just an eight-year-old with no real-world experience, but, even most eight-year-olds can manage to add more than “stuff” to the conversational agenda.

The fact that Homer managed to end up married to Marge suggests that even he could craft a bit of small talk with more depth than Ralph.

7 Homer: He Made It Into The Dictionary

Within the world of The Simpsons, Homer’s idiocy is so legendary that he actually made it into the dictionary. The episode “Homer Defined” saw Homer save the plant from meltdown despite having no idea what he was doing, and this the word Homer made into the dictionary: 1. American Bonehead; 2. ‘Pull A Homer’ – to succeed despite idiocy.

6 Ralph: His Grasp On English Wasn’t Great

While Homer was landing himself one of the highest accolades in the English language, being put into the dictionary, Ralph was seriously struggling to keep up with standard use of the English language. Whether it’s his revelation that he “picked his nose till it bleededed,” or when he asked if “alligators alligate,” or when he announced that was “A Star Wars.”

5 Homer: Allowed Himself To Become Obese

This point can be viewed on multiple levels. On the simple side of things, we have Homer’s consistent obesity throughout the show. On a more specific level, we have the time when Homer made himself obese so that he could work from home. The season seven episode “King-Size Homer” saw him gain 61 pounds in order to claim disability benefits. If that isn’t stupidity, then what is?

4 Ralph: He Ran For President

This is a strange one because, in theory, Ralph’s weirdly successful presidential run was arguably the most intelligent thing he had ever done. However, he didn’t really know what he was doing.

He managed to win the love of both the Democrats and Republicans and used his kindness to win over Lisa eventually. That said, imagine an eight-year-old president who only likes to talk about cats…

3 Homer: He Ended Up Married To His Vegas Wife

One of Homer’s most stupid moments of all time came when he and Ned Flanders visited Las Vegas and married two random women they just met. Not only was this an idiotic thing to do at the time no matter how drunk they were, but Homer didn’t give a thought to Marge back at home. His loving and incredibly lenient wife didn’t find out that Homer had literally married another woman for many, many years.

2 Ralph: “That’s Unpossible”

One of Ralph’s clearest declarations of his own stupidity came when he failed English. As the points above about his inability to grasp language suggest, this was never really something we could expect from Ralph, but still. “Me fail English?” he asks. “That’s unpossible.” A lack of grammar and a word that doesn’t exist.

1 Homer: “Sixty-Four Slices Of American Cheese”

Homer loves food. That’s one thing just about everyone on earth is well aware of. One thing that we never expected him to be overly addicted to was processed cheese, but it turns out he can’t get enough of the stuff. At one point, Homer sat at his kitchen table and hungrily muttered “mmm, sixty-four slices of American cheese,” before declaring to Marge that he thought the cheese had made him go blind.
