The Simpsons Released 3 Christmas Episodes In 1 Year

The Simpsons may have been around for decades, but the show hasn’t made too many Christmas specials in that time, so it’s odd that the animated sitcom has released three Christmas episodes in the last year alone. In over 30 years on the air, The Simpsons has only put together a mere eighteen Christmas episodes, despite this tradition beginning with the very first episode of the iconic show way back in 1989.

At first glance, that number may sound like plenty of Christmas specials dotted throughout the 700+ episodes that viewers have spent in the company of The Simpsons. But while it may be a lot more than The Simpsons’ five Thanksgiving episodes, the fact that very few of these Christmas specials aired in the show’s first ten seasons proves that Springfield’s first family still took a while to warm to the idea of Yuletide specials. This may explain why the creators are now attempting to make up for the lost time.

Bizarrely, The Simpsons have managed to release three Christmas episodes this year alone, with one last December, one in mid-May, and another on the way next month. This deluge of Christmas content from The Simpsons is particularly odd when the show only had two Christmas specials in its first eight seasons and only offered one more before leaving what many fans consider its Golden Age in season twelve. The slew of Yuletide content is an unexpected treat for fans, with Christmas episodes now appearing even more often than Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials. The first of the year’s festive offerings, “Bobby It’s Cold Outside”, was broadcast on the seasonally appropriate December 15, 2019 air date.

The second Christmas special The Simpsons released in the last year was season 31’s season finale, “The Way of the Dog,” which (despite airing in May) is a throwback to The Simpsons’ very first episode. Since the episode, which guest stars Austin Powers’ Michael York and Cate Blanchett, flashes back to the first episode of The Simpsons, most of its action is set at Christmas when the Simpsons acquired their beloved mutt Santa’s Little Helper. As if those two Christmas episodes in one year weren’t enough, next month will bring the arrival of the confusingly named “A Springfield Summer Christmas for Christmas”, rounding out the trio with an installment guest-starring The Office’s Elli Kemper.

In its first few seasons, which most fans agree were the strongest period of The Simpsons’ writing, the show largely eschewed holiday specials outside of the annual Treehouse of Horror specials. At that point, the first episode’s “Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire” and season seven’s “Marge Be Not Proud” were the only Simpsons Christmas offerings available to fans for some time. However, as The Simpsons has continued Christmas episodes have become a more regular fixture on the show, with many of the series’ eighteen Christmas episodes airing after the start of its twentieth season.
