At Gamescom 2020, the EA and Sims 4 team unveiled the newest The Sims 4 Game Pack in Star Wars: Journey to Batuu. During a virtual preview event earlier this week, head developer Antonio Romeo showcased the new world and illustrated the gameplay mechanics that will allow Simmers to tell their own Star Wars story for the very first time. Though this Game Pack has received mixed reactions and some backlash, details shared from the virtual preview event make it clear this Pack was created with passion and heart by Star Wars fans, for both Star Wars fans and non-Star-Wars-fan Simmers alike.

The Sims 4: Star Wars: Journey to Batuu launches players into the world, experiences, and politics of a new location within the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The developers of the Journey to Batuu Game Pack spent time in Galaxy’s Edge to get a better sense of the layout and mood of the surrounding world to better bring it to life in the game.

Journey to Batuu’s gameplay appears to be a mix of the vacation world experiences of Jungle Adventure or Island Living and the more story-based structure of Strangerville. Batuu will remain a separate entity unto itself, something that was very important to the developers working on the game. They wanted to allow players to create their own Star Wars story without having characters like Storm Troopers or Rey and Kylo Ren wandering around Willow Creek, or Mortimer Goth flying an X-Wing over Windenburg. However, for players that want to, there are many CAS and Build and Buy Mode items that will transfer back into the regular game.

Batuu will be a vacation world, only accessible via a Sim’s phone under the Travel option. Players cannot live on Batuu and will have access to a rabbit hole dwelling only to change clothes, freshen up and fill needs, sleep, and, if the player finds a particularly attractive alien to bring home, WooHoo. Players are under no obligation to leave Batuu and can stay as long as they want, and the trip costs them no Simoleons, making it what Romeo dubbed, “the ideal vacation.”

When players first enter Create-A-Sim, they will have the option to select one of three new Star Wars aspirations relating to the three major factions of Batuu: The Resistance or the First Order, and the scoundrels. Players may choose one of the three factions to work with while on Batuu. They may choose to work with The Resistance, which will allow them to eventually meet and work with Rey from the new Star Wars trilogy. They can also choose to work for Kylo Ren and the First Order. However, they can also choose to work as a smuggler for Hondo Ohnaka and the scoundrels, or avoid siding with any factions and simply explore the world.

Batuu contains three unique regions for players to explore, and unlike previous Expansion and Game Packs like City Living or Get Famous, where it was clear the world was only a facade and there wasn’t as much ability to explore, players are welcome and encouraged to walk around and experience all the landscape has to offer. The developers really took their time to craft a world with the same atmosphere as Star Wars that could allow players to fully immerse themselves in this new environment. The three main areas of Batuu correspond with the three factions warring for power in the background. Players can explore the Resistance Camp, the First Order Outpost, and the Black Spire Outpost. In each area, they can enjoy recognizable foods and drinks like blue and green milk from vendors. Any recipe they consume while in Batuu they will learn, just like when a Sim eats an exotic food from a restaurant in Dine Out, and will be able to reproduce it at home.

Whoever the player chooses to work for, they will need to complete a series of missions and tasks. For example, players who want to be a scoundrel will need to speak to Hondo Ohnaka using some of the special new conversation options. They may need to engage him in a game of sabacc and win for him to choose to take the Sim seriously. From there, they will receive missions that often involve smuggling. When a player engages in these missions, they will learn and develop new skills. They will also need to make some choices, not unlike they do when children ask for advice in Parenthood, and live with the consequences of those choices.

And consequences there are. Players will develop a reputation and influence with each of the three factions based on their actions in Batuu. Ideally, they will have a good reputation with the faction they choose to work with, and this will give them more influence with the group. This may come at a cost of getting a bad reputation with another group, which can be tricky, especially for players who develop a bad reputation with the First Order. They may get caught by Storm Troopers while on missions and may find themselves in trouble, and possibly even in the brig.

Perhaps one of the more exciting mechanics in the pack is the ability to customize various gadgets from the Star Wars universe. Players can craft their own lightsaber and learn to duel. They can also craft a droid that will follow them around Batuu and help them out of sticky situations. Both of these items can be brought back into the regular Sims world.

Players can also purchase goodies at the vendors in Batuu, particularly from the familiar Dok-Ondar. There are many exclusive items to choose from. In fact, this Game Pack boasts the most extra content for a Game Pack in the Sims 4 lineup. Players can bring back clothing for CAS, furniture and appliances, and even toys like a sabacc table or a miniature stuffed Porg or Ewok. They can also build their homes using the Star Wars and Batuu Build Mode styles if they wish.

With so much content available and a clear sense that the developers had fun and put their hearts into making this Pack immersive and accessible to both fans of Star Wars and Simmers just looking for a new experience, The Sims 4: Star Wars: Journey to Batuu may just be a surprise hit. The level of detail and attempt at a more RPG style of gameplay really is a new direction for The Sims 4 and one that may be a welcome and immersive change of pace.
