The Superstore Finale Hints One Employee Was a Serial Killer

It all started with a foot found out front of Cloud 9 Store #1217 in the third season of Superstore. While the foot was never shown, this launched a mystery that stretched over four seasons as more severed feet appeared, and in the closing moments of the series finale, the mystery was solved, though the person behind it raised more questions than he answered.

At the end of Season 2, a tornado assaulted St. Louis and destroyed the Cloud 9 store the series was set in. This was an important moment in Superstore, as it set several events in motion. Jonah and Amy expressed their deep-seated emotions for each other for the first time, Mateo had to admit to himself and everyone else that he still had feelings for Jeff, and Cheyenne finally found her green hair thingee in the rubble.

Amazingly, no one was severely injured or died, though Glenn’s car was destroyed yet again. The staff came to the realization that Brett had gone missing, and was assumed dead in the tornado. They eventually found out that he had just gone home. Furthermore, after the tornado, the first foot was found in the parking lot in Season 3, Episode 2, and the assumption was it belonged to Brett. His return with both feet attached killed that theory off quickly.

Over the course of the next few seasons, more severed feet kept popping up at the store, leading to a lot of wild speculation. Consistently appearing near Cloud 9 Store #1217 led to the standing theory that it was an employee who was responsible for these crimes. In Season 6, Episode 14, the culprit upped the ante by leaving a duffle bag containing eight more severed feet in the store.

The episode that followed was the series finale. Echoing the pilot, Garrett’s voice over described his feelings about the store while a montage of clips showed what happened to everyone. However, one of those clips revealed the identity of the person leaving the feet. It was Elias Greene, a long-time store associate who had appeared in 106 out of 113 episodes and barely spoke a line the entire time.

In those final moments, Elias popped up in a quiet corner of the store, pulled a foot out from his Cloud 9 vest, and carefully placed it on a shelf. A wry smile on his face, Elias walked away, leaving behind so many questions. The natural assumption was that Elias was a serial killer, but the answer may not have been that simple.

It was made clear during Superstore that no other evidence had been found relating to the feet. The rest of the bodies were never recovered, and no one knew who the feet belonged to. It’s entirely possible that Elias was stealing the feet from another source, such as a morgue, a mortuary or a graveyard. That being said, stealing the feet from somewhere else doesn’t make Elias any less disturbing. In addition to the source of the feet, motivation was a big mystery. Since the whole thing started after Elias almost died in the tornado incident, it’s not hard to imagine that the trauma unlocked something dark inside of him.

Oddly enough, answers might have been closer than people knew as Elias was Glenn’s brother-in-law. Jerusha, Elias’ sister and Glenn’s wife, may have had some insights into the situation that could have explained everything. Regardless, it’s hard not to feel cheated by the missed opportunity of seeing Glenn’s reaction to being related to the guy who was leaving feet around his store.
