The Teen Wolf Movie Wont Work Without Dylan OBriens Stiles

When MTV’s Teen Wolf series dropped in 2011, it quickly skyrocketed in popularity and became one of the cable network’s most successful shows. Loosely inspired by the original 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox, the similarities between the two properties end there, as MTV introduced a darker, edgier, more modern version of Teen Wolf to young adult viewers in America. Running for six seasons, Teen Wolf went off the air in 2017, however fan response across social media ensured the show still maintained a healthy presence in the cultural zeitgeist.

A Teen Wolf film, helmed by series creator, writer and producer Jeff Davis, was announced in late September 2021, and it was revealed that most of the original cast members would be returning, including Tyler Posey reprising his lead role as Scott McCall. While fans were thrilled at the casting announcement, it was clear that Dylan O’Brien — who played Posey’s best friend Stiles Stilinski — was not attached to the project. O’Brien spoke with Variety about the casting process being accelerated and that while he wished more than anything to be a part of the film, “it was a very difficult decision” not to be.

MTV’s Teen Wolf followed teenager Scott McCall after being bitten by a werewolf turned his life upside down. Now, gifted with supernatural, superhuman abilities, Scott juggled the challenges of being a teenaged werewolf: like keeping his friends and family safe from other supernatural threats while also trying to curb his now-instinctual, monstrous tendencies. Many in Teen Wolf’s fanbase credited O’Brien and Posey’s onscreen chemistry as one of the highlights of the series, with O’Brien’s portrayal of Stiles garnering praise from fans and critics with many hailing him as the true heart of Teen Wolf.

Stiles was a perfect mix of sarcastic yet compassionate, often acting as Scott’s “man in the chair” when it came to facing off against other supernatural foes. In the earlier seasons of Teen Wolf, Stiles was often the comedic relief when things took characteristically dark turns, and his calming, stable presence was often an anchoring point for Scott as he navigated the new challenges of being a werewolf. Over the course of Teen Wolf, fans fell in love with O’Brien as he showcased his impressive acting range, from comedic relief, supernatural investigations and even a more sensitive, heartbroken side as Stiles grappled with his romantic feelings towards Holland Roden’s Lydia.

Dylan O’Brien’s absence from the Teen Wolf film, though understandable — O’Brien has a packed schedule as an in-demand actor, most recently appearing in the comedy-adventure flick Love and Monsters — did serve as a major disappointment to Teen Wolf fans. Stiles was a huge part of Teen Wolf’s heart, and his absence will certainly be felt throughout the film, and may even affect fan responses to the movie. Is Teen Wolf really Teen Wolf without the Stiles/Scott dynamic? It remains to be seen how the film’s writers will adjust to Stiles’s absence — particularly because Linden Ashby, who played O’Brien’s father, Noah Stilinski, is also slated to return to the film. It may be difficult for writers to try to create a believable storyline to cover all the bases of Stiles’ absence.

Other notable cast members — who played key roles in Scott McCall’s journey to becoming an alpha werewolf are noticeably absent from the Teen Wolf film, including Tyler Hoechlin, who played Derek Hale. Derek was instrumental to Scott’s transition to werewolf and how to balance both sides of his life. Also missing from the cast list is Arden Cho, who appeared as Kira Yukimura. Cho stated she was approached by casting directors to appear in the film, however she was only offered half the salary of her female costars Crystal Reed, Holland Roden and Shelly Hennig. With so many key characters not slated to appear in the upcoming film adaptation, it remains to be seen whether or not a Teen Wolf movie will be satisfactory enough for fans of the MTV series.
