The Texas Chainsaw Massacre What Went Wrong During The Dinner Scene

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had an infamously troubled production, but nothing was worse for the cast and crew than the infamous dinner scene. Directed by late horror legend Tobe Hooper, 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remains one of the most effective films in the history of the genre. Made on a tiny budget and with unknown actors, Hooper’s film manages to feel like a documentary at times, especially thanks to its gritty, grimy look. The fact that many people believed it was based on a true story for decades didn’t hurt either.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre would of course go on to spawn a long-running franchise, but sadly, none of the follow-ups ever really came close to the quality of the original masterpiece. It’s telling that Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the most re-released films in home video history, as fans have been and remain committed to owning the best possible version of such a harrowing journey into terror.

As much as fans love The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, those that worked on the set of the film had a hell of a time making it. The small budget, and sweltering Texas heat led to working conditions that most likely wouldn’t be allowed to occur on a film set today, with the dinner scene being the prime example.

Just about every factor that could work against the filming of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s dinner scene ended up doing so. For one, the sequence had a lot of elements, and ultimately took over 24 hours to finish filming. Secondly, it was shot in a farmhouse in Texas during the summer, and the temperature rarely went below 100 degrees. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the smells on set were about as horrific as the idea of Leatherface chasing down a victim with a chainsaw. Some of the cast hadn’t washed their clothes in weeks for continuity reasons, since the film didn’t have multiple sets of character wardrobes. The set itself was also decorated with dead animal parts for effect, which also didn’t smell great.

Adding to the disgust factor was the fact that the food in the scene began to rot over the course of filming, thanks to the high heat given off by the lighting equipment. This got to the point where cast members had to go outside periodically to vomit. Beyond the grossness, the heat and humidity was so bad, and the filming so long, that some of the actors genuinely began to lose touch with reality, with Sally Hardesty actress Marilyn Burns beginning to worry that she might actually be killed. To sum the experience up, Hitchhiker actor Edwin Neal called shooting The Texas Chainsaw Massacre more miserable than his service in the Vietnam War.
