The True Story Behind Netflixs Rescued by Ruby

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Rescued by Ruby, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s new heart-warming tale, Rescued by Ruby, depicted the real-life story of a K-9 search dog named Ruby. The film starred Grant Gustin, best recognized for his role as Barry Allen/The Flash in the Arrowverse television franchise, as the titular character named Daniel O’Neill. Gustin’s character was based on the eponymous real-life Rhode Island state trooper, also known as Ruby’s owner.

Rescued by Ruby began with eight-month-old Ruby’s adoption after five failed attempts to find a home due to her hyperactivity, partly due to her status as part border-collie and Australian shepherd. Ironically, Bear, who played Ruby in the film, had a similar success story. O’Neill took on the challenge due to his interest in becoming a member of the K-9 search and rescue team despite seven previous rejections and to prevent Ruby’s euthanization. The newfound pair began their training process, but it didn’t initially go smoothly, considering Ruby’s excitable personality. However, O’Neill revealed their commonalities when he shared his dyslexia and hyperactivity diagnosis, which caused people to not believe in him.

Ruby defied all odds when she passed the K-9 entry exam with flying colors. She later proved to be a vital asset and was considered one of the best K-9 units on the team. While six years passed in real-life between Ruby’s adoption and her rescue of a teenage boy, the film made it seem like only a few months had gone by. In 2017, Ruby was sent on a search and rescue mission to locate a teenage boy who had been missing for 36 hours in the woods. The boy was later revealed to be the son of Pat, a shelter volunteer. He was in critical condition, but Ruby managed to find him just in time and led the other police units to him by merely her bark.

“She saved a life because she was given life, It was a ‘thank you’ to the Rhode Island SPCA and the state police for not giving up on her,” stated the real-life O’Neill in an interview with NBC10. The following year, Ruby was voted the “Search and Rescue Dog of the Year” by the American Humane Hero Dog organization. As of 2022, O’Neill and Ruby have shared 11 eventful years together as partners, which even involved the conviction of two murderers and her 19-hour disappearance in 2019.

Netflix’s Rescued by Ruby was a perfect example of how a dog-centered film can be tear-jerking without the dog having to die at the end. The film encouraged viewers to choose the “adopt don’t shop” policy when selecting a new furry companion. In addition to the heart-warming true story aspect, the performances by Gustin and Party of Five’s Scott Wolf were also enjoyable. Gustin’s portrayal touched O’Neill, considering his kids’ high opinions of the actor. “For him to wear my badge number and take my name is awesome,” revealed O’Neill in the same interview. Rescued by Ruby proved anyone can succeed if they put their minds to it.
