The Umbrella Academy aired its first season in February 2019, and it has since proven to be a massive success for Netflix. Based on the original comic book series created by Gerard Way and published under Dark Horse Comics, the show follows the riveting and ever-changing lives of the seven Hargreeves siblings after the death of their adoptive father.
Sibling number four, Klaus Hargreeves, delivers most of the comedic lines of the bunch, making him stand out as a fan-favorite among the characters. Klaus also finds himself at the center of some of the most emotional moments of season one. Here are five of Number Four’s funniest and five of his most heartbreaking lines.
10 HEARTBREAKING: “I’m The One Person In That House Nobody Will Even Notice Is Gone.”
Klaus is used to being abandoned. As a child, Sir Reginald Hargreeves would lock him in a mausoleum with no one but the spirits of the dead to keep him “company.” Klaus is sometimes dismissed as an attention-seeker by his siblings who don’t fully understand his power.
Klaus is kidnapped by Hazel and Cha-Cha, and they use him as bait so they can locate Number Five and finish their mission. Klaus mocks their plan, saying it won’t work because none of his siblings will notice his absence.
9 FUNNY: “I’d Like To Apologize… That You Are Depriving Some Village Of Their Idiot!”
After returning to 2019, Klaus convinces Diego to let him tag along on a car ride so he can get to the Veterans of Foreign Wars bar. After having a drink, he gazes at the Vietnam War photographs. A veteran approaches him, accuses him of not being a veteran, and coarsely asks him which war he served in. Klaus says it’s none of his business.
Diego tries to intervene, but the older veteran demands an apology out of Klaus. Klaus apologizes that the man is “depriving some village of their idiot” and starts a bar fight.
8 HEARTBREAKING: “I Want To Be Numb Again.”
Klaus has struggled with drug addiction since he was a teenager. Without learning to control his power, he has lived with the unwanted voices and images of spirits in his head.
When Klaus goes digging for drugs in his room, Ben advises him to look at the ways his life has positively changed since he tried getting clean. Klaus disagrees, saying that “sobriety is overrated” because the way their brothers and sisters view him hasn’t changed and his attempt to conjure Dave has been unsuccessful.
7 FUNNY: “I’m Just Gonna Go Murder Mom, I’ll Be Right Back.”
Klaus rarely misses the opportunity to crack a one-liner at his siblings, and Luther trying to hold a serious conversation about his suspicion toward their father’s death is no exception.
Luther is apprehensive because Sir Reginald Hargreeves was found dead without his trademark monocle. He hints at the idea that one of his siblings was holding a grudge and killed their father. Klaus responds to the accusation lightly, walking out of the room in Allison’s skirt and sarcastically saying he was going to go murder their mother.
6 HEARTBREAKING: “Diego, Just Stop. Stop, Stop! She’s Gone. She’s Gone, Okay?”
Klaus is no stranger to loss, having time-traveled back to the Vietnam War, fallen in love, and had that love stolen from him on the battlefield.
When the Umbrella Academy collapses, Grace Hargreeves falls with it. Diego desperately searches through the debris and hopes that their mother is still alive. He asks Klaus to help him, but Klaus knows that there is no chance she survived the incident. He knows how much Grace meant to Diego and vice versa, so he comforts his brother.
5 FUNNY: “You Just Patrick Swayzeed Me.”
Ben spends the majority of the season as a ghost whom only Klaus can see with no physical influence on the world. As Klaus becomes more sober, his powers grow stronger and Ben’s capabilities change.
Klaus tries going back to drugs after days of sobriety, but Ben punches him in the face, causing Klaus to spit out the pill. This comes as a shock to both of them because, normally, Ben cannot make any physical contact with Klaus. Klaus reaches out his hand and compares Ben’s punch to one thrown by Patrick Swayze.
4 HEARTBREAKING: “I Lost Someone. The Only Person I’ve Ever Truly Loved More Than Myself.”
Diego and Klaus have an argument after their visit to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Bar. Klaus goes back to taking drugs while in the car, and Diego wants to know why he decides to put substances into his body and why he was crying in the bar.
Klaus finally opens up and says he turned back to drugs and alcohol because he lost the love of his life. Diego softens up a bit but tells Klaus that he can see the one he lost using his power. Thus begins Klaus’s journey to conjure Dave.
3 FUNNY: “Hey, Did I Ever Tell You Guys About The Time I Waxed My Ass With Chocolate Pudding?”
Luther and Klaus crash Five’s mission to camp out in the parking lot of Meritech Prosthetics. Luther enters the van through the passenger side door, and Klaus appears out of nowhere, dancing in the back of the van with Five’s beloved mannequin, Dolores.
Klaus breaks up a heated conversation between Luther and an incredibly annoyed Five when he leans into the front seat and asks if he had ever told them about waxing himself with pudding. This line came close to getting a laugh out of Five, and that’s saying something.
2 HEARTBREAKING: “We Were Just Kids.”
The Hargreeves were just kids when they were bought from their birth mothers, underwent training for dangerous missions, and grew up under the pressure of the public eye. Klaus and his siblings had anything but a normal childhood, and this affected their lives into adulthood.
Klaus confronts their father about this when he is transported to a place that appears to be the afterlife. A tear streams down Klaus’s face as he delivers this line that represents the root of him and his siblings’ trauma. Sir Reginald Hargreeves responds by saying, “You were never just kids. You were meant to save the world.”
1 FUNNY: “Maybe They’re Here For Kenny’s Birthday!”
Klaus finds a way to add humor to the most alarming and daunting situations, even when he doesn’t intend to. The Umbrella Academy meets at a bowling alley to regroup and plan how they locate Vanya and put a stop to her apocalyptic destruction. A kid named Kenny is having his birthday party at the same bowling alley.
The Commission sends an armed assault team to shoot at the Hargreeves and prevent them from stopping Vanya. The siblings take cover behind the tables and shelves of bowling balls. Diego shouts, “Who the hell are these guys?” and Klaus shouts back that the assault team might be there for Kenny’s birthday party.
