The Unforgivable: The Main Characters, Ranked By Intelligence

The Netflix drama The Unforgivable is a story of characters dealing with crimes and punishments, some in more intelligent ways than others.

The new Netflix drama The Unforgivable is an intense drama filled with complicated characters. What is interesting about the movie is that all the characters have motivations that are easy to sympathize with, however, some of these characters go about getting what they want in smart while others make foolish decisions.

In this story of a terrible crime and the effects it has on people years later, there are a lot of emotions these characters deal with. For some, their anger and heartbreak cloud their judgment while other characters see through these emotions to make their own intelligent choices.

10 Keith Whelan

The Whelan family is still clearly suffering from losing their father years earlier and the loss has perhaps struck Keith the hardest. He is filled with anger and his story in the movie is one of revenge. However, Keith is just an impulsive person who doesn’t seem to consider the consequences.

He wants to get even with Ruth for killing his father but seems too reckless to actually have a plan. The fact that he is later found to be having an affair with his brother’s wife shows he just acts without considering whether or not it’s a good idea.

9 Steve Whelan

Steve initially seems to be a more level-headed and intelligent brother compared to Keith. He pushes against Keith’s revenge plan, knowing that it will end in disaster, and tries to convince Keith to abandon it.

However, his own sense of inadequacies causes him to get on board with the plan and he proves to be just as foolish as his brother. In fact, his new plan for getting revenge ends up being even more misguided and evil than Keith’s plan and it is made even dumber since Steve doesn’t really seem to believe in it at all but is willing to go through with it.

8 Katherine Malcolm

It is interesting that several characters in the story make bad decisions out of anger, but then there are kind characters like Katherine who make well-meaning albeit foolish choices at times. She is a caring sister to Emily and wants to help her address the trauma of her past.

This leads her to seek out Ruth and she makes the kind gesture of telling her able Emily. As nice as it is, Katherine had no idea what kind of person Ruth was. She read some letters and saw her do one good deed and that was enough to decide to trust her. Her decision to meet Ruth could have put herself and her family in danger.

7 John Ingram

John Ingram is another one of the more likable characters in The Unforgivable. He is a lawyer who willingly helps Ruth out after just meeting her because he sympathizes with her. And like Katherine, his kindness is sometimes a little foolish.

Ruth comes to John’s house unnoticed when his family was home and lies about who she is. The fact that he would offer to help her, especially after learning what she went to prison for seems unnecessarily dangerous. And the fact that he hid that information from his wife was certainly not the right move.

6 Vincent Cross

Vincent is the parole officer assigned to Ruth when she is released from prison. He is mostly a fairly grounded person who offers helpful and practical advice for how Ruth can start over. However, this is also contradicted by his demeaning insistence that she will always be a convict.

While some of it could be seen as tough love to get Ruth accustomed to the challenges she will face, it is not a very smart way of motivating people to be rehabilitated. He softens a bit more as the movie goes one but that just adds to his inconsistencies.

5 Emily Malcolm

Much of the movie surrounds the people in Emily Malcolm’s life as they try to determine what is best for her. However, Emily herself is not actually a big character in the story. As such, she is not given much of an opportunity to show herself as intelligent or not.

It is revealed that she experienced a traumatic and life-changing event as a child which affects her. The fact that she avoids confronting her past might not be the best way to get over it, but it is also easy to understand her hesitancy.

4 Blake

After playing intense characters like the Punisher, it is fun to see Jon Bernthal play such a charming character like Blake. As someone Ruth ends up working with at her job, Blake is just a friendly and thoughtful person who seems to have a good read on people.

Though Ruth is initially standoffish, Blake continues to offer her help without being pushy. He has a bit of goofy energy that doesn’t make him seem incredibly intelligent. But he seems to have a very practical and positive outlook that is a smart way to operate.

3 Ruth Slater

Ruth Slater is one of Sandra Bullock’s best characters, showing a more complex character than the Hollywood star is known for. At first, it is hard to sympathize with Ruth too much given the crimes she was imprisoned for and her anger often causes her to lash out in frustrating ways.

But it is also easy to see where Ruth’s frustrations come from, especially when the truth about her crimes is revealed. And in the intense climax, Ruth is shown to put aside her anger and diffuse a dangerous situation in an intelligent way.

2 Rachel Malcolm

Rachel is Emily’s adoptive mother and a very protective parent. There are times when it seems as though her concern over her daughter was a bit misguided even though she had Emily’s interests in mind.

But when Ruth emerges and wants to be a part of Emily’s life, Rachel takes a very rational approach to the difficult situation. Unlike her husband, she puts aside her emotions and sees the value of meeting with Ruth, both for them and for Emily’s sake.

1 Liz Ingram

Liz doesn’t have a huge overall role in the movie, but she always seems to be the smartest one in the room when she is on screen. She is a stern yet caring wife and husband who becomes understandably concerned with her husband’s association with Ruth.

All of Liz’s arguments are intelligent and hard to disagree with. She never reacts irrationally and seems to always have the safest choice in mind. And when she learns the truth about Ruth, she is also smart enough to change her opinion and help in whatever way she can.
