Elena, Damon, and Stefan lit up audience’s screens with their chemistry in 2009 in The Vampire Diaries. The supernatural twists coupled with compelling storylines made for a captivating watch, and the show continues to enthrall long after its final episode aired. In the era of reboots, spinoffs, and remakes, it’s intriguing to think about which actors would make the cut to play the beloved characters in 2021.

In the original show, up and coming talent and a few established names in the teen drama world were cast. Today, knowing the cult status of The Vampire Diaries, a diverse mix of actors, musicians, and Hollywood favorites would make for the perfect supernatural and human residents of Mystic Falls.

9 Elena Gilbert/Katherine Pierce: Olivia Rodrigo

The eighteen-year-old musician is new on the block, but the Filipino-American has made her mark with her music, her songs, and her general vibe. Acting may not be an immediate concern for Olivia Rodrigo, but should she want to make her next acting appearance after High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and Elena Gilbert would be a fine role to grow into.

Rodrigo has the innocence and purity that was always shining through Elena like a light, and her acting in her music videos proves that she can play an unhinged, angry girl too — like Elena’s unpredictable doppelganger Katherine. Elena could also be pretty funny, and Rodrigo’s personality would be a great fit for those bits.

8 Damon Salvatore: Timothée Chalamet

This young heartthrob has the midnight hair and chiseled jaw that is so characteristic of Damon, and if looks could kill, Chalamet would be top of that list. He has played a bad boy in movies and shows like Lady Bird and Homeland, so that should be a piece of cake for the actor.

Damon is roguish, but he also has a soft side which is full of anguish, heartbreak, pain, and affection for Elena. Timothée’s vast experience in performing angsty, lost, and emotional men on screen makes him a tailor-made for the character of Damon Salvatore.

7 Stefan Salvatore: Regé-Jean Page

A vampire with a conscience, Stefan was a redeemed creature – one with the virtues of patience, compassion, kindness, and the desire to be better. He had put his days of murder behind him, but even then he had an edge to him. Regé-Jean Page’s Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton was not exactly the same, but had the essence of the character.

Page’s transformation into a caring, loving husband on the Shonda Rhimes show was appreciated hugely by fans, who liked to see the Duke’s softer side. The actor would pull off Stefan’s dichotomous nature flawlessly.

6 Bonnie Bennett: Zendaya

The charismatic Zendaya has a slew of amazing roles under her belt, and her stints in Euphoria and the Spider-Man movies show her acting chops beautifully, especially as a teenager. It would be intriguing to watch her perform in a fantasy TV series as a supernatural character.

Bonnie Bennett was a truly special high schooler; her witchy abilities made her a lot more empathetic and powerful than the others in her school, and nobody but Zendaya could be the new Bonnie in a The Vampire Diaries reimagining.

5 Klaus Mikaelson: Harry Styles

Charismatic and dangerous, Klaus was a crowd favorite for his fiery attitude, which often gave way to softness and affection for a few people. Harry Styles definitely has the swagger and braggadocio that is so characteristic of Klaus, and coupled with his ability to perform intense parts like in Dunkirk, he would be a great Original vampire.

The accent and Harry’s classical face would add to the mythology of Klaus beautifully. Klaus’ best trait on The Vampire Diaries was his devotion to his love interests, which fans would want to see with Styles. It would be exciting to see the singer fill the characters shoes.

4 Alaric Saltzman: Idris Elba

The paternal figure in The Vampire Diaries was sweet but also had a dark side to him – he was intent on hunting down vampires initially, and then even more so when he returned from the Other Side. Idris Elba’s acting skills in good as well as evil characters would make him a suitable Alaric.

Elba’s best roles were in Luther and The Wire, but he also played an awkward nanny in Turn Up Charlie, which could be a good starting point for performing Alaric. He definitely has the grittiness and guts to cover the professor’s angrier side.

3 Caroline Forbes: Clémence Poésy

Teen turned vampire Caroline Forbes began as a happy-go-lucky, whimsical young high schooler, who could be a bit of a mean girl. She was a classic teen drama character, and French actress Clémence Poésy could give a modern flair to her character, if recast.

She is known for her portrayal of Veela Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter, so fitting into a supernatural part would come naturally to the actress. Poésy is no stranger to being cast in teen dramas either, her most notable appearance being in Gossip Girl.

2 Tyler Lockwood: Nick Jonas

The werewolf Tyler was a total jock in the show, and the first actor with that demeanor that comes to mind is Nick Jonas. The Jonas brother is blessed with a physique and youthful appearance that would suit Tyler’s role perfectly, as well as the mannerisms.

Nick’s performance in Jumanji was a great mix of wit, humor, and some angst, since he had been lost in the game since 20 years. Tyler Lockwood, too, is a lighthearted character to begin with, whose confusion and supernatural power makes him a lot more intense.

1 Jeremy Gilbert: Manny Jacinto

After his main role in The Good Place as the underrated Jason, Manny Jacinto has been in the spotlight near constantly. He was recently seen in the magical horror mini series Brand New Cherry Flavor, so he is primed to join the fantastical and sexy world of The Vampire Diaries.

Jeremy was a troubled teen, who later brightened up a fair bit. It would be new and exciting to see Manny in this role, and his boyish looks would be appreciated by TVD fans.
