Tragedy is something that every single character in The Vampire Diaries experienced, but how tragic were their lives before the series began?

Any TV series, especially one rooted in the supernatural, is bound to be stuffed to the brim with violence, tragedy, and heartache. And when it comes to tormenting its main characters, The Vampire Diaries was an expert. However, what about the characters and their life experiences prior to the start of the series?

The main characters of the show run the gamut from average teens to the most terrifying ancient villains imaginable, and their pasts are just as varied. So with that in mind, which characters had the least or most tragic backstories in the story before the series itself actually began?

10 Tyler Lockwood

Once Tyler actually gets pulled into the supernatural world, his life undeniably gets a lot harder. However, prior to the start of The Vampire Diaries, it really seems like he had it made in the shade.

Yes, his father was a grade-A jerk, but his mom really loved him, and he was an incredibly popular, super wealthy, and overly spoiled guy who hadn’t experienced much pain or loss in his life at all.

9 Caroline Forbes

Absent parents are a pretty consistent mainstay in the TVD world, and unfortunately for Caroline, she wasn’t spared from that trend. Her father wasn’t a huge part of her life, and she and her mother had a lot of problems in their relationship.

And while Caroline did have decent social status at the start, most people brushed her off or didn’t take her seriously, and she desperately wanted to be someone’s first choice, but never really was.

8 Bonnie Bennett

The fact that so many of the teenage characters on the show have terrible parents at least explains how they constantly find themselves in life-or-death situations in high school with nary a parental supervisor to be found, and that applies to Bonnie as well.

Her mother abandoned her without explanation (and without even telling Bonnie that she was a witch) after she took down Mikael, and it seems like her (allegedly alcohol-abusing) Grams was the only person that Bonnie had to rely on.

7 Matt Donovan

Luckily for Matt, once the supernatural drama started he managed to keep out of it more than any of the other main characters on the show.

However, his life before the start of the series seems to have been the toughest out of all the teens. While everyone else had at least one other person to lean on, Matt seems to be the one in the Donovan family that everyone else leans on.

6 Stefan Salvatore

When someone has had a hundred plus years to build up their backstory, it comes as no surprise when it’s mired in tragedy. Stefan was obviously the favored Salvatore son when he was human, and despite all of his misdeeds when he became a vampire, he still had a lot of love and care in his life.

However, he still murdered his own father and has a crippling blood addiction that drives him to near madness, which is not fun for anyone.

5 Damon Salvatore

Damon seemed permanently cursed to be the second favorite Salvatore brother for his entire life. He endured a lot of rejection and abuse from his father, and endured the loss of his mother.

The woman that he loved and would have given anything for was in love with his brother, and he spent years of his life being tortured by the Augustines with no one the wiser.

4 Klaus Mikaelson

Klaus might just be the best villain in the history of the series, and while nothing could excuse his monstrosity, a lot of his backstory does explain it.

He was horribly abused by his father, and he later discovered that he wasn’t even Mikael’s biological son. His own mother cursed him, he spent his entire life running from certain death at Mikael’s hands, he spent years being driven mad by the Hunter’s Curse, and at some point, every member of his family has tried to abandon him.

3 Jeremy Gilbert

It seems like the Gilbert family was a very happy and normal family before tragedy struck. Given that Elena was a doppelgänger and Jeremy was a hunter, it would have never lasted, however, Jeremy got a brutal awakening to the harshness of the world when both of his parents died in a car accident.

Loss is a common experience in The Vampire Diaries, but Jeremy lost half of his family before the story even began.

2 Elena Gilbert

Clearly, nearly everything that can be applied to Jeremy also applies to Elena, and in large part, their tragic pasts are the same.

However, one distinct difference between Jeremy and Elena is that Elena was actually in the car with her parents when they both died, and they were only in the car because they were picking Elena up. And, while she didn’t know it at the time, her father actually made the choice to die in order for Elena to be saved.

1 Katherine Pierce

Katherine might be one of the best villains in the history of TVD, but she has good reason to be.

As a human, Katherine gave birth to a daughter she never even got to hold. When she was sent away from Bulgaria, she ran into Klaus, who was planning on using her in his ritual sacrifice. She wasn’t game for that plan, so she turned herself into a vampire and ran, but in order to exact his revenge, Klaus slaughtered her entire family and kept her on the run for centuries afterward.
