The show was no stranger to romance, but not everyone on The Vampire Diaries got their happily ever after. Because of all the actors who entered and exited the series, the best relationships were often cut short, and several fan-favorite pairings were forced to split when The Originals moved the Mikaelsons to New Orleans.

Given the supernatural elements of the show, death tore couples apart all too often and prevented them from getting the endgame they deserved. Most of the characters in The Vampire Diaries broke up for the worst reasons and didn’t end up with the right person.

9 Tyler Lockwood: Liv Parker

Tyler isn’t the most popular character, and despite their long-term relationship, he’s not among Caroline’s best love interests in The Vampire Diaries. He’s arguably not a great boyfriend, but he treated Liv better than the other women he dated.

Viewers didn’t get very attached to Liv because she joined the show so late in the game, but it’s for that reason she should’ve ended up with Tyler. Tyler’s playboy attitude made it difficult to want him with anyone that the audience cared about.

8 Bonnie Bennett: Lorenzo St. John

There’s no question that Enzo was Bonnie’s soulmate. Bonnie was treated badly by her friends and used for her powers, and Enzo was one of the few people who wasn’t having it. Enzo didn’t just care about keeping Bonnie alive. He cared about her happiness.

When she was with Enzo, Bonnie was the happiest viewers had ever seen her. She even admitted that she always dreamed of being loved by someone the way Enzo loves her. Not only was his murder unnecessary, but Enzo had one of the most heartbreaking deaths in The Vampire Diaries.

7 Jeremy Gilbert: Anna Zhu

It’s shocking that Jeremy and Anna’s relationship only went on for half a season. They grew close quickly, and Anna gave Jeremy her blood so he could turn himself into a vampire. Jeremy had been through a lot of suffering, and Anna became a bright spot in his life.

Many fans were fond of Jeremy’s romance with Bonnie, but, at least the first time around, Jeremy’s heart was never fully in it. When Anna appears to Jeremy as a ghost, he kisses her and admits to Elena that it’s always been Anna he loves. His relationship with Bonnie was tainted, and it never felt right to put them back together.

6 Matt Donavan: Rebekah Mikaelson

Like Tyler, Matt’s romances weren’t the best. He was a pretty useless character, and it seemed as though the show had no idea what to do with him after The Vampire Diaries Season 4. Rebekah was the one person who made Matt more interesting, and her mission to earn his trust was a notable storyline.

Their chemistry was incredible, and there wasn’t anyone who was better suited for Matt than her. It’s disappointing that they couldn’t end up together due to a spinoff, rather than what was best for the story.

5 Alaric Saltzman: Jenna Sommers

While Jo could also be considered Alaric’s best romance in The Vampire Diaries, the show spent far too much time getting viewers invested in his relationship with Jenna. Jo and Alaric met and got married within the same season, and while her death was heartbreaking, their marriage lacked foundation.

Alaric and Jenna had been through a lot together, and Alaric was a better person when she was with him. It was around The Vampire Diaries Season 6 that Alaric’s character began to go downhill.

4 Stefan Salvatore: Katherine Pierce

There’s something compelling about a cynical character who only cares about one specific person. Especially someone they have nothing in common with. Stefan is the opposite of Katherine in every way. He’s warm, selfless, and Damon wasn’t wrong when he called him broody.

Stefan was the only person who could get through to Katherine’s humanity. She risked her life for him on several occasions, and no matter how he treated her, Katherine loved Stefan up until the moment she died. It’s up in the air whether Katherine deserved redemption, but there’s no denying that he would have been her happy ending.

3 Caroline Forbes: Klaus Mikaelson

Klaus and Caroline’s lack of screentime is proof that quality is more important than quantity. Their relationship was close to hitting its high point when Klaus left the series to star in The Originals. Caroline never had the same connection or chemistry with any character other than Klaus, no matter how many seasons her other relationships had on him.

Rooting for Caroline to be someone else felt like settling, and since they kissed in the series finale of the spinoff, it’s likely they would’ve ended up together had Klaus not sacrificed himself for Hope.

2 Damon Salvatore: Bonnie Bennett

Damon and Bonnie mastered the enemies-to-friends trope, and it would’ve been interesting to see if this relationship could have gone further. The two had a romance in the books, but, surprisingly, their chemistry was even better in the show. Bonnie and Damon’s bickering made them The Vampire Diaries’ most lively duo.

They grew to love one another, faults and all, and after they became best friends, Bonnie stopped judging Damon for all his past mistakes. They were closer than either of them were with Elena in some ways, and their life together would never be boring.

1 Elena Gilbert: Stefan Salvatore

She may have ended up with his older brother, but there are plenty of scenes that prove Stefan and Elena were soulmates in The Vampire Diaries. They were deeply in love with each other for the first half of the series, and the showrunners admitted in an interview with Deadline that they wanted Stefan and Elena to end up together had Nina Dobrev not left the show.

Stefan and Elena’s love was pure, and Stefan was always a better person when she was around. Plus, their endgame could’ve opened the door for other fan-favorite couples to get together.
