Elena’s love for the Salvatores was the most controversial element of The Vampire Diaries. Since Damon was the antagonist of the first season, it was obvious why she was with his little brother. But when Damon fell in love with Elena and started to change his ways, the love triangle kicked into high gear.

Neither Damon nor Stefan was able to let go of Elena, so no matter who she chose, someone would end up heartbroken. Elena being in a relationship with both of them would have solved the main dilemma of the series, but it could also be argued that Elena was right to let one of them go.

8 Both: Elena Is The Love Of Both Of Their Lives

Neither Damon nor Stefan ever loved anyone like they loved Elena. Stefan may have eventually moved on with Caroline, but he never appeared to be as invested in the relationship as she was. When Katherine pretended to be Elena in Season 5, it became clear that Stefan still had feelings for her.

Elena came first in both of their lives, and whenever they dated someone other than her they were settling. Both they and their partners deserved better than an unequal relationship. If Elena was with Stefan and Damon, everyone would be with who they loved.

7 Choose: Stefan Wouldn’t Be Open To It

Damon wants to give his heart to one person and know that there’s no one else they’d rather be with. However, when it comes to Elena, Damon would be open to anything if it meant being with her. Stefan, on the other hand, probably wouldn’t be interested in the arrangement.

Stefan was self-conscious about Elena even being friends with Damon, so it’s hard to believe that he would be happy in a polyamorous relationship. Stefan is extremely stuck in his ways, so out of the two brothers, he’d be the one to shoot it down.

6 Both: Elena’s Choice Put The Salvatores At Odds

Many viewers disliked Elena because she was the reason the brothers were always at each other’s throats. She bounced back and forth between them, and it was detrimental to Damon and Stefan’s relationship. It would be difficult for either of them to see the girl they loved with anyone else, let alone their own brother.

There’s bound to be animosity between two people pining for the same girl, and it was heartbreaking that Elena was able to get in between them so easily. But if Elena decided to pursue a relationship with them simultaneously, the problem could cease to exist.

5 Choose: Damon And Stefan Would Argue Over What’s Best For Elena

Elena is capable of making her own decisions, but Stefan and Damon often disagreed when it came to keeping her safe. Damon wanted Elena to stay alive, no matter the consequences, and Stefan understood that Elena was in control of her own life.

Damon’s desperation to save Elena, mixed with Stefan’s awareness of her independence, caused problems for all three of them. These arguments would only get worse if they were both Elena’s significant other.

4 Both: Elena Didn’t Want To Lose Either

Elena struggled with choosing between the brothers knowing that if she picked one she’d have to let the other go. But if Elena truly loved only one of them, it shouldn’t have been as hard as it was to make a decision. Elena bounced back and forth so often because her heart was split in two.

There came a point where a choice between Stefan and Damon seemed to come down to numbers and figures more than her actual feelings. In The Vampire Diaries books, Elena admits that she loves them both, “drop for drop and grain for grain.” Choosing one person when Elena loves both equally is a recipe for disaster.

3 Choose: It Didn’t Work Out With Katherine

Stefan and Damon were both dating Katherine in 1864, and it was a colossal disaster. Katherine loved Stefan more than Damon, and Damon was self-conscious about their relationship. Damon asks Katherine, “is my love not enough?” making it clear that he wants to be her one and only.

Katherine was the only person who seemed happy in this arrangement, and it was her love for both of them that led to their demise. Stefan and Damon are killed by their father when they try to save Katherine from the townspeople.

2 Both: The Brothers Love Each Other As Much (If Not More) Than Elena

Stefan and Damon are the most important part of each other’s lives, and they depend on one another completely. They both wanted happiness for their brother, but if Elena chose between them, the happiness of one meant the misery of the other.

Elena being in a polyamorous relationship with both of them would stop that from being true. Additionally, they could all live together in the Salvatore Boarding House, as Damon and Stefan would want to stick together as a family.

1 Choose: The Cure Could Complicate Things

The matter of the cure was a huge issue in Elena and Damon’s relationship. Damon liked being a vampire, but Elena wanted to grow old and start a family. Things would get even crazier if a third party was involved.

Elena, Stefan, and Damon would all have to decide if they wanted to become human or continue on as immortals. If their choices didn’t line up, one of them would be left without the others. The supernatural element of the show adds an extra layer of difficulty to an already complex situation.
