The Voice coach John Legend is applying his musical knowledge to a modern-day movie musical adaption of The Phantom of the Opera set in New Orleans. The singer has plenty of Broadway knowledge as he is a two-time Tony Award nominee and one-time winner. In 2017, John accepted the award for Best Revival of a Play for his co-producer role on Jitney. A year later, he was nominated for Best Original Score for writing “(I Guess I) Miss You” for SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. The award instead went to David Yazbeck for The Band’s Visit. In October 2021, John joined the production team behind Broadway’s Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, and in 2018 John starred as the lead in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.

The Phantom of the Opera musical originated from a 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, which followed main character, Christine, whose father, a famous singer, has passed away. She is raised in the Paris Opera House, and a deformed ghost falls in love with her, teaching her to sing and causing danger when his jealousy gets the best of him. The book was adapted into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, of Cats fame, in 1986 and is the longest-running Broadway show in history. The musical was adapted into a film directed by Joel Schumacher in 2004. The film also starred Emmy Rossum as Christine and Gerard Butler as the Phantom.

John Legend is now taking the classic musical and readapting it as a modern-day film. Deadline reported that John will be working alongside producers Harvey Mason Jr. and Mike Jackson, and screenwriter John Fusco. The writer said, “This is set in the sultry nightlife scene of modern-day New Orleans, the world of jazz, R&B, neo-Soul and funk.” He also explained he felt inspired by “America’s most haunted city” and that the city’s music, food, “voodoo mystique” and “masquerade pageantry of Mardi Gras” made a perfect adaption of the original Paris setting.

John and Mike previously worked together producing The Legend of the Underground, A Crime on the Bayou, and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. This is not John’s first time working with Harvey or an Andrew Lloyd Webber piece. Harvey worked as a music producer on NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert, and Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for the original 1971 Broadway production of the show. The musical is reportedly set around an ingénue soul singer, reminiscent of modern singer-songwriter H.E.R.

With the recent release of Steven Spielberg’s new West Side Story adaptation and the announcement of the Wicked movie, movie musical renewals are at the forefront of every film buff’s mind. The stakes are high for a Phantom of the Opera adaption as it is one of the most beloved shows of all time, and no fan takes well to their favorite musical being butchered by Hollywood. The Voice coach may have a lot on his plate as he’s taking on a show with a 35-year run and reimagining it in a way that’s never been done before, which is not an easy feat. However, with his talent and musical credits, he’s sure to turn out something great alongside talented writers and directors.
