Negan made his first appearance in The Walking Dead at the end of the sixth season. These are the best episodes where he takes the lead.

Negan made his first on screen appearance in The Walking Dead at the tail end of the sixth season finale. After making his point and asserting dominance through the killing of Abraham and Glenn, Negan became the main antagonist of the show until the end of season eight.

This culminated into the all-out war between the oppressed communities and Negan’s ‘Saviors’. After years of sitting in a cell, thanks to the efforts of Rick Grimes, Negan has slowly become accepted by the communities to some degree. The main reason being due to him killing Alpha, the main antagonist of the last two seasons as well as protecting Judith during the storm of season nine. Below is a list of the top rated episodes in the series to have a strong focus on Negan.

10 Season 8 Episode 5: The Big Scary U (7.3)

This episode explores a bit more of Negan’s back story. Following on from the previous episode, Negan and Gabriel become trapped inside a trailer outside of the sanctuary, which has become surrounded by walkers.

During the time in the trailer, the two talk about their past transgressions including Gabriel betraying his congregation and Negan talks about how he took over as leader of the Sanctuary. When it appears that no one is coming to save them, the duo work together to escape.

9 Season 7 Episode 4: Service (7.6)

Having recently forced Rick and his group into submission, Negan and the saviors arrive at Alexandria for the first time. Rick has set aside items for the saviors, however Negan explains that it’s up to them what they take. The group ends up taking all of the Alexandrian’s beds and weapons, leaving them with no way of fighting back or protecting themselves.

A savior finds Deana’s camcorder which has footage of Rick from back when they arrived at Alexandria and taunts him for becoming weaker. The episode also includes a funny interaction when Negan and Gabriel meet for the first time with Negan making note of Gabriel’s creepiness.

8 Season 7 Episode 16: The First Day of The Rest of Your Life (7.6)

In the season seven finale, Rick teams up with the scavengers to launch an attack on Negan. At the Sanctuary, Negan, aware of Rick’s plans, puts Sasha in a coffin and leaves for Alexandria. Upon their arrival it is revealed that Jadis and her group made a deal with Negan and they hold Alexandria at gun point. However, Sasha, with the help of Eugene has poisoned herself to give the group a chance.

When the Alexandrians resistance initially fails and Negan is about to kill Carl in front of Rick, the Kingdom arrives and the war truly begins.

7 Season 8 Episode 15: Worth (7.8)

The penultimate episode of season eight sets the ground work for the finale as well as bringing the ‘All Out War’ storyline to a close. Negan has returned to the sanctuary after being held captive by Jadis. His first order of business is to deal with Simon for plotting against him and killing the Scavengers. It is then revealed that it was Simon who ordered the mass killing of the Oceanside males.

Negan and Simon engage in a one on one brawl with Negan emerging victorious, killing Simon. It is also revealed that Laura, informed Negan of Dwight’s betrayal and uses this to leak false information to Rick.

6 Season 10 Episode 6: Bonds (8.0)

This episode features some strong scenes between Beta and Negan, two total opposites. Alpha requests Beta to take Negan out into the woods to test his skills and loyalty. The tests involve digging graves for walkers, after skinning their faces and capturing a live pig.

Beta refuses to let Negan have any of the pig but another Whisperer offers him some food. An angry Beta kills the Whisperer and as a horde of walkers arrive, leaves Negan to die. When Beta returns to Alpha informing her that Negan has failed, a cocky Negan turns up with a makeshift Lucille and pledges his loyalty to Alpha.

5 Season 9 Episode 9: Adaptation (8.0)

In the previous episode, Negan finds his cell door unlocked and escapes confinement. Picking up from that, Negan finds Alexandria to be mostly deserted and is able to gather some supplies. Judith catches him attempting to flee over the fence and ultimately allows him to leave.

Negan makes his way back to the Sanctuary, which has been dilapidated and overgrown with weeds. After spending a little time there, Negan realizes there isn’t anything left for him at the Sanctuary and travels back to Alexandria.

4 Season 10 Episode 5: What It Always Is (8.3)

Out of Alexandria again, Negan is joined by the child of two former Saviors, Brandon. Negan slowly becomes more and more irritated with Brandon, firstly after he does the Saviors whistle, talks about how he hates Rick Grimes and claims he heard Negan shot Carl.

Negan becomes enraged at this, having respect for Carl and explains he would never kill a kid. The two meet a woman and her son, who Brandon ends up killing. Disgusted and angry, Negan beats Brandon to death. The episode ends with Negan turning himself over to the Whisperers.

3 Season 7 Episode 8: Hearts Still Beating (8.7)

Negan returns to Alexandria in the episode whilst Rick is out gathering supplies with Aaron. He hangs around Rick’s home shaving and cooking pasta for Carl and Judith, making the Alexandrian’s all feel uneasy.

Later on, out on the street, Negan plays pool against Spencer where he is given a brief history of the community and how Rick became in charge. Spencer asks Negan to put him in charge of Alexandria which he responds to by killing Spencer, claiming that unlike Rick, he has no guts. This is then swiftly followed by Rosita shooting at Negan but hitting Lucille. Eugene admits it was him that made the bullet and the Saviors take him with them.

2 Season 7 Episode 1: The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be (9.1)

The Walking Dead fans are well aware of the cliffhanger that was given at the end of season six. This episode picks up a few hours following Negan’s line up but via Rick provides flashbacks on who got Lucilled. After Negan kills Abraham and Glenn, Rick tells Negan that at some point, he’s going to kill him.

Angry at Rick for not being subservient, he pulls him into the RV and drives him to a location full of walkers. He taunts Rick and continues to assert his dominance, trying to force Rick into submission.

1 Season 10 Episode 12: Walk With Us (9.2)

This episode marks a major turning point in the Whisperer arc and it’s largely due to the actions of Negan. After capturing Lydia, Negan locks her inside a cabin and travels back to Alpha. He informs her that he has found what she is looking for.

Negan leads her to a cabin, along the way he tells her how she shouldn’t take her daughter’s life but she reiterates its Lydia’s destiny. It is discovered that Negan has led her to a different cabin one to where he left Lydia. Negan then slits Alpha’s throat and takes her decapitated head to Carol, revealing it her who helped him escape.
