Father Gabriel Stokes is introduced in The Walking Dead season 5 and has been consistently disliked from his introduction to the series. Despite the show’s attempts to develop his character from a cowardly priest to a fighter with a cool girlfriend and one good eye, the general consensus is that his storyline has gotten more interesting, but he’s still not exactly a fan favorite.

10 “He Told Me To Hang You”

Full Quote: “I’ve spoken to God. He told me to hang you.”

Season 10 gives fans an edgier Father Gabriel than earlier seasons, and with Rosita and Coco, it makes sense that he feels he has more to protect.

The Whisperer, Gamma, is captured by the Alexandria crew, and he doesn’t hesitate to dish out some harsh judgment when she brings his religion into the conversation and tells him to ask God if she’s telling him the truth.

9 “Anything Is Possible Until Your Heart Stops Beating”

Full Quote: “You can certainly blame me for the fact that you have a life, but after that, what are you going to do with it? How are you going to make what needs to happen, happen? Anything is possible until your heart stops beating.”

Father Gabriel begins the show as scared and weak. He hates himself for sacrificing members of his church to save his own life, but still lives in fear. His guilt is a character-defining trait.

This conversation with a disheveled and emotionally exhausted Rosita shows that he has genuine empathy and a drive to help others survive this as well, and is a likable moment of character development.

It’s always interesting to see Father Gabriel reach a momentary breaking point, and Negan knows how to push his buttons. Throughout season 9, Gabriel often serves as a mix between Negan’s jailer and his therapist, and the mid-season finale finally shows him giving him a piece of his mind.

The outburst is so effective, Negan asks him what happened, rather than continuing to poke at him.

7 “God Has Given Us The Courage To Save It Ourselves”

Full Quote: “We’ve been praying together. Praying that God will save our town. Well, our prayers have been answered. God will save Alexandria because God has given us the courage to save it ourselves.”

Sometimes what people need to hear is not who is going to come to save them, but that they have the ability to save themselves. Father Gabriel sees his people struggling and he steps up to the plate.

Gabriel grabs a machete and gives them that extra push that they need. The people of Alexandria may get knocked down, but they are strong enough to get back up and keep fighting.

6 “…I Shouldn’t Have To Listen To It Too”

Full Quote: “It’s bad enough I gotta clean up your sh**. I shouldn’t have to listen to it too.”

Being Negan’s jailer comes with the less-than-exciting task of feeding and cleaning up after him. Actually, probably everything that comes with the job is terrible.

Negan, on the other hand, is thrilled by every little thing that he can do to get Gabriel to break. Though the patient priest shows him kindness, he doesn’t just sit and take it. He makes sure to get a good quip in here and there too.

5 “I Will Not Fail You”

Full Quote: “We have 24-hour shifts set up on each of the watchtowers, each one of them fully supplied and ready. In the case we’re incurred upon, we have drivers assigned, evacuation and distraction, and the rendezvous we discussed. In the event of an emergency, my first priority is Judith. I will not fail you.”

Gabriel makes an effort to step up and prove himself worthy in the season 6 finale. He isn’t just coasting by on nice speeches and kind words. He does not want to be ruled by his regrets, he wants to be a man of action.

Gabriel’s promise to Rick about Judith, as well as his confident update on what’s going with the town, showcases how hard he is working and that he is seeking to change his old ways.

4 “…But It Does Make You A Tremendous Sh**”

Given their histories of being under-appreciated, Spencer and Gabriel make an ideal pair. Spencer admits his true feelings about his dislike for Rick and his style of leadership. He goes so far as to say that it would be better if Rick was dead.

Gabriel’s past in the priesthood occasionally inspires spontaneous confession, but Gabriel is not above blunt retorts when he thinks they are in the wrong.

Father Gabriel’s resolve to rehabilitate Negan is impressive. Negan really tries to get under Gabriel’s skin in their prison cell talks, and he has a lot of ammo. He taunts the priest about his faith, his sex life, and his relationship with Rosita.

Negan just refuses to stop pushing and makes hints at Rosita having feelings for someone else. Father Gabriel stays calm and ends the conversation with the last word.

2 “Do We Deserve A Second Chance?”

Full Quote: “Do we deserve a second chance? I don’t know. Sometimes, we get one anyway.”

Dante, the Whisperer infiltrator, worked his way into Alexandria, poisoned the town’s water source, and later killed Siddiq. He is also the first man that Gabriel kills in cold blood when he’s of no immediate threat to himself.

Gabriel stays chillingly calm amidst his internal breakdown and plunges the knife into the man who almost hurt his family, but quickly becomes unhinged, stabbing him over and over again.

1 “Start Pulling Teeth And Taking Fingers”

Full Quote: “If you come across one of them, keep them alive, start pulling teeth and taking fingers. Get information, because we now know the more pain and fear you pour over them, the sooner they drop the act, which is what it is.”

Their people are dying, the Whisperers keep finding a way into their lives, and Rosita is plagued with PTSD-like nightmares and worry for the baby. Father Gabriel is done playing nice.

Aside from the killing of Dante, this is one of Father Gabriel’s darkest (and coolest) moments in the show. The man who used to use tuning forks to guide meditation for the murderer in their jail cell wants to torture people, and the fans are here for it.
