The Walking Dead Rick’s Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures)

For the nine seasons that Rick Grimes appeared on The Walking Dead, he was truly the driving force of the series. The audience mostly experienced the zombie apocalypse through his eyes, and the community and found family that formed between the characters was truly built around Rick’s leadership.

Although Rick has been conspicuously absent from the series ever since sacrificing himself to save the others, hopefully The Walking Dead will provide some resolution for Rick’s character before the series comes to its end this season. But even if Rick never appears on the show again, his transformation throughout the years was astounding.

9 Season 1

Surviving in the post-apocalyptic world isn’t easy for anyone, but Rick Grimes had an especially rough go of things. Abandoned in a hospital and presumed dead by everyone who loved him, Rick woke up alone and completely clueless as to what he was walking into when he left those hospital walls.

However, it would seem that his training as a cop really came in handy. Not only does he manage to stay alive in this incredibly dangerous new world, but he reunites his family and quickly becomes a leader among the group in Atlanta.

8 Season 2

Reuniting with his family was all that Rick could think about for a big chunk of season 1, and it was a borderline miracle that he found his wife, his son, and his best friend. However, season 2 brought a lot of messy complications. Lori discovered that she was pregnant, which made the already obsessive Shane even more consumed with the idea that he should be the head of their family instead of Rick.

And although the Greene farm offered some reprieve and a place to headquarter their search for Sophia, Rick and Hershel are at odds with one another about Rick’s group actually staying with them.

7 Season 3

After Lori’s relationship with Shane and the utter deterioration of Rick’s relationship with his best friend (that culminated with Rick actually killing Shane), season 3 saw a much harder and authoritarian version of Rick taking control.

And although his marriage to Lori wasn’t in the best shape, Rick was completely unprepared to lose his wife. Add in the conflict with the Governor and Woodbury, and it’s safe to say that Rick Grimes did not have an easy go of things this season.

6 Season 4

The Walking Dead Rick’s Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures)

Rick Grimes is a character who seems to vacillate between his urges towards mercy and brutality, but for a good amount of time, it seemed like mercy had won out. The Woodbury residents had integrated well into the prison, and although natural threats like walkers and disease were a problem, life was generally looking up.

But, the Governor returned and destroyed it all, leaving Rick, Carl, and Michonne adrift. And, during a particularly violent confrontation with the Claimers towards the end of the season, it became readily apparent that the dangerous side of Rick was alive and well.

5 Season 5

After escaping and destroying Terminus, Rick’s group is reunited but still in terrible shape. And worse, Rick seems to be at his most nihilistic point in the series.

But a reprieve arrives in the form of Aaron, and while Rick is entirely untrusting of the safety of Alexandria, he eventually comes around. Assimilating isn’t easy, but Rick eventually realizes that he wants to create a good community and help the Alexandrians learn how to survive.

4 Season 6

Throughout season 6, Rick seems to be mostly preoccupied with making Alexandria a truly safe place despite the fact that there is danger lurking around every corner. When things truly start to fall apart at home and the neighborhood is overrun by walkers, Rick is devastated when Carl is badly injured and loses an eye.

And although Rick obviously isn’t aware of it until the very end of the season, the Saviors are becoming an overwhelming threat that Rick might not be able to defeat.

3 Season 7

The Walking Dead Rick’s Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures)

Every time Rick’s group loses a member, it is truly like losing a part of the family. But understandably, losing Glenn was exceptionally devastating. Were it not for Glenn’s help, Rick likely would have died in Atlanta, and who knows what this found family would have even been.

And while Rick tries to swallow his pain and pride and become one of Negan’s servants, he ultimately comes to realize that surviving under the thumb of the Saviors is an untenable position for everyone.

2 Season 8

The Walking Dead Rick’s Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures)

The battle against the Saviors seems to be all-consuming for Rick, but he suffers the greatest blow imaginable when Carl is bitten by a walker and dies in the middle of the season.

He is obviously devastated and struggles to pull himself back together, and he is even more conflicted because Carl’s last wish that they make peace with Negan is in direct opposition to all of the rage that Rick is feeling for everything that he has lost.

1 Season 9

Although it took everything in him to let go of his enmity with the Saviors, Rick letting Negan live was only the start of the difficulties that he and the group would face.

He tries to bring the Saviors together with those that they had subjugated, but ultimately Rick isn’t even there to see the results of his dream. When a horde of walkers threatens the entire community, Rick blows up a bridge while he’s on it to protect the family that he had built. And as of now, that is the end of his story, though there’s always the possibility that Rick will return to The Walking Dead before the show’s conclusion.
