The Wheel of Time Moiraine is [SPOILER] Now What

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Wheel of Time Episode 6, “The Flame of Tar Valon,” available now on Prime Video.

Unlike the books that it’s adapting, The Wheel of Time TV series has centered around Moiraine Damodred as the main character. Moiraine, played by Rosamund Pike, is a powerful Aes Sedai who has spent the last 20 years of her life searching for the Dragon Reborn and hence hasn’t spent much time at the White Tower. As she tells her Warder, Lan, her saddle feels more like home than the Aes Sedai headquarters in the city of Tar Valon.

Nevertheless, Moiraine still has to report back to the White Tower, and half of the first season involves her mission to get back there with her four candidates for the Dragon. Once they make it, the audience learns about something else that draws her to the White Tower: her secret romance with the Amyrlin Seat, Siuan Sanche. Clearly, she has enough of a home there that her sudden banishment from the city is going to cause complications.

The circumstances of this fate for Moiraine are unusual. Siuan is the only other Aes Sedai who knows what she’s doing and why it’s so important, but to safeguard the secret, they must keep up a public front of being in opposition to each other. During the first audience that Moiraine has with the Amyrlin, others are present so she can’t disclose any details about her quest, but being an Aes Sedai, she also can’t lie. Her refusal to speak about the matter means that everyone knows she’s hiding something, and Siuan has to feign being furious with her.

Later, Moiraine has a meeting with Maigan, the head of the Blue Ajah. Maigan has a direct order for her, and it’s a real wrench in the works: Moiraine is told to stay in the White Tower rather than continuing on her travels. The only way that Moiraine can get out of it and back to her all-important mission is to receive a conflicting order from a higher-ranking Aes Sedai. When she meets with Siuan privately and tells her what happened, they both understand immediately that the sentence the Amyrlin Seat must give Moiraine is exile. Not only do they carry out this plan the next day, but Moiraine swears on the Oath Rod to ensure that she can’t break her promise to leave until Siuan allows her.

There’s been no indication of how long this exile will last, but Moiraine’s emotional goodbye to her soulmate suggests that neither of them expect it to be brief — even by their standards, which often means going for years at a time without seeing each other. It’s most likely that Moiraine sees her main objective to stay by the Dragon Reborn, but so far she still can’t narrow down who that is, beyond the five potentials found in the Two Rivers.

The Wheel of Time Moiraine is [SPOILER] Now What

Once the Dragon is revealed, he or she isn’t likely to want to remain in Tar Valon among the scheming Aes Sedai, so Siuan won’t have a good enough excuse to tell Moiraine that her exile is ended. However, those of the main characters who aren’t the Dragon will have to find their own places in the world, and there’s no guarantee that all or even any of them will choose to stay with Moiraine.

Egwene and Nynaeve have both discovered their ability to channel, and for that to be trained they’ll need to stay at the White Tower. Nynaeve’s feelings toward Moiraine’s Warder might make this a difficult choice for her, and Egwene also has a relationship with a man that she may not want to give up. One way or another, the group that has been journeying together and growing close to each other will probably be splitting up in Season 2 of The Wheel of Time. Moiraine can of course be a part of the show without setting foot in Tar Valon, but her time in the spotlight may be coming to an end. The consequences of her banishment from the White Tower affect the entire show.

Before the characters of The Wheel of Time figure out where to settle down, they’ll have to make it through the final two episodes of Season 1, released on Fridays on Prime Video.
