5 Queen Calanthe

No sooner had the battle occurred than Queen Calanthe was mortally wounded, and could no longer defend her city. The Nilfgaard army sacked Cintra, while her citizens tried to fight them off, their iron maiden helpless to defend them.

4 Vilgefortz

Not only was he known as a formidable mage, Vilgefortz proved to be an accomplished fighter, as seen when he engaged a squadron of Nilfgaardian soldiers on his own. The only person who stood a chance dueling the Black Knight besides the White Wolf, his swordsmanship was legendary.

After engaging Cahir, Vilgefortz made an amateur mistake; he exhausted all of his magic by manifesting various swords and daggers in quick succession. Not of that mattered very much because he proved to be a turncoat, implying Cahir wouldn’t have killed him anyway.

3 Cahir

Known as the Black Knight, Cahir was one of the Nilfgaard army’s most capable commanders. Not only did he hold great influence over the Nilfgaardian hordes, but he was also devastating in single-hand combat. There were few who would stand up against him in a duel, though he notably fought against the mage Vilgefortz before the Battle of Sodden.

Throughout the series, Cahir was shown cutting down citizens in the streets of Cintra, dispatching doppelgangers, and mounting the ransacking of prominent keeps around The Continent.

2 Yennefer

Having grown up derided and underestimated in her youth, Yennefer of Vengerberg would go on to attend the mage academy of Aretuza and become one of its most gifted sorceresses. With the ability to teleport and put entire townships under her command, she often didn’t need to resort to fighting her own battles.

At the Battle of Sodden Hill, however, Yennefer was compelled to use her magic against the advancing Nilfgaard army, employing a specifically dangerous type of fire magic that only a few very talented mages could harness without grave injury.

1 Geralt

While he may not have been as powerful as a wizard or mage, Geralt of Rivia possessed certain proficiency in magic thanks to the mutations he underwent during his trials to become a witcher. Those abilities, combined with his prowess with a blade, made him one of the most feared mercenaries on The Continent.

While he mostly fought monsters and ghouls that plagued innocent towns, he knew the value of life, whether human or otherwise. Because he had an in-depth and personal relationship with death, he always took combat incredibly seriously, making him not only the best fighter in the series but the most honorable one.
