The Witcher Everything We Know About Redanias Spymaster Dijkstra

A man of intimidating physical stature, The Witcher’s Sigismund Dijkstra was nearly seven feet tall and completely unafraid to throw his weight around when necessary. He had men at his beck and call, however, to ensure he rarely had to fight his own battles, but when it came down to it, he wasn’t entirely afraid to get his hands bloodied.

Dijkstra began as a minor spy in Novigrad but quickly rose to power after getting his hands on a series of documents proving the incompetence of Redania’s Secretary of State, Michael de Noailles. Dijkstra sent a secret missive to Redania’s king, Vizimir II, informing him of the information he’d obtained. King Vizimir was so impressed by his ambition, he granted Dijkstra the position of Royal Security Assignee, elevating his societal status and granting him an incredible amount of power.

While this initial attempt to gain recognition elevated his status, Dijkstra worked it to his advantage and created a strong network of faithful spies spread from Kovir to the Nilfgaardian Empire. With his finger on the Northern Kingdoms’ political pulse, he became indispensable to King Vizimir, and his political affiliations put him in a favorable position to continue furthering his gains.

In the lore created by author Andrzej Sapkowski, Dijkstra’s role as spymaster eventually led him to Geralt while Ciri was at Aretuza. When Geralt realized the danger Ciri was in, he fought against Dijkstra and his men, breaking one of Dijkstra’s ankles and forcing him to faint from the agony before he could call for the soldiers he’d left behind on the ship.

During the war with Niflgaard, he headed the Regency Council that ruled the north with sorceress Philippa Eilhart, whom he’d taken on as a lover. During this time, he hung numerous people in Redania in an effort to gain information on the traitors who assassinated King Vizimir and Nilfgaard’s activities. His position eventually made him a target for assassins, and he was forced to flee and head into hiding.

Djikstra’s injury from that encounter with Geralt became something of a sore spot between them when CD Projekt Red introduced Redania’s former spymaster to The Witcher game franchise in Wild Hunt. Using the alias Sigi Reuven, Geralt first encountered Dijkstra in Novigrad, where he’d become the proprietor of a bathhouse. The bathhouse was a front for his real operation, as Dijkstra’s intelligence and cunning allowed him to swiftly rise to power as one of Novigrad’s four crime lords.

Geralt met with Dijkstra while looking for Dandelion, who’d mysteriously disappeared after encountering Ciri. Dijkstra offered to help, but only after Geralt did a favor for him. He led Geralt into an empty underground vault guarded by a troll named Bart and explained that he’d been robbed. Once full of gold and valuables, the vault had been broken into through a hole in the brick wall it shared with the sewer tunnels. Geralt’s search for Dijkstra’s missing treasure led to an encounter with the witch hunters in Novigrad, who were capturing, torturing and killing the mages living in the city. By attacking the witch hunters’ outpost, Geralt could get information on the location and the key to the vault where Dijkstra’s treasure was being hoarded.

Later in the game, when Geralt began working with Vernon Roche, he learned that Roche was also working with Dijkstra and the spymaster Thaler, who were plotting to assassinate Redania’s mad king, Radovid. The three of them believed assassinating Radovid would help them regain order in the North, specifically Temeria, in the wake of the war with Nilfgaard. They wanted Geralt to help them, and he could either opt to remain neutral or assist them in carrying out their assassination plot.

In the event that Geralt helped and saw Radovid assassinated, he was further provoked to intervene, as Dijkstra planned to betray Thaler and Roche, killing them both and taking power for himself. Because witchers are notorious for maintaining a neutral stance in political matters, Dijkstra was counting on him staying out of it, but after Dijkstra’s true plot for power became evident, it was up to the player to determine the outcome of the war with Nilfgaard. Dijkstra believed restoring Temeria’s monarchical power was too high a risk, as it had been in shambles far too long. Negotiating with Nilfgaard from such a weak position proved to be unwise in his opinion, so instead, he planned to become Redania’s chancellor and continue warring with Nilfgaard. Geralt could either allow Dijkstra to carry out his plot or side with Roche and Thaler, which resulted in his attacking and exterminating Dijkstra and his men.

Dijkstra proved on numerous occasions to be an incredible political mind. While the cliché suggests most in positions of power are corrupt, Dijkstra was actually a crime lord. He proved on numerous occasions that he wasn’t afraid to bend the law to his will when it benefited him, which made planting him in a powerful position a questionable choice. He craved power, and when given the opportunity to grab onto it again, he did manage to drive back Nilfgaard’s forces and end the war.

People weren’t pleased with him taking power, however, perhaps because of the corrupt means through which he gained it and how he exercised it in the past, but a man of his stature and cunning would certainly spend his resources watching his back. Dijkstra knew well how to play all sides of the board in the game of war, always working to make sure he came out on top, which made him a terrifying force to be reckoned with in the world of The Witcher.
