The Witcher How Netflixs Bathtub Scenes Are Different From The Game

When Netflix released The Witcher in December 2019, many fans were thrilled to see that the titular character, Geralt (played by Henry Cavill) found himself in a bathtub more than once. The excitement comes not only from seeing Cavill’s chiseled, nude physique, but also because these tub scenes are a nod back to The Witcher 3, one of the video game adaptations of the story.

The Witcher TV show and video games are based on fantasy novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Witchers are rare, mutated humans who hunt monsters for a price. The Netflix series tells the interweaving stories of the white-haired witcher Geralt, his love interest and sorceress Yennefer (played by Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (played by Freya Allan), a young princess on the run from her homeland after her grandmother, Queen Calanthe, was killed in a brutal attack from the neighboring kingdom of Nilfgaard.

So, why were fans of The Witcher so excited to see Geralt in the bathtub? It comes down to a particularly unforgettable shot from a video game cut scene.

The Witcher 3 Tub Scene

The Witcher 3 was released in 2015, and its opening sequence shows Geralt reclining in a wooden tub near a blazing fireplace in a spacial room at Kaer Morhen, a witcher’s fortress. He is splayed out with arms and legs hanging over the edges of the steamy, rustic tub. At one point, he is suggestively shown straight on as water glistens on his body. Considering his daring, swashbuckling way of life, it’s a very different thing to see Geralt as calm and peaceful. A naked Yennefer is revealed to be reclining on a chaise across the room. She disturbs his serenity by unleashing a magical creature into the water so as to spur Geralt into starting his day of training Ciri in the ways of witchers.

Not surprisingly, screenshots of this particular scene became a meme amongst fans of The Witcher 3 – especially one particular shot in which Geralt uncrosses his ankles and spreads his feet on either side of the tub. The image was used to exemplify the ultimate in satisfaction, comfort, and relaxation.

Tub Scenes in Netflix’s The Witcher

When it comes to the Netflix version of The Witcher, there are two different bathing scenes. They come in episodes 4 and 5. The bath in episode 4 is not a relaxing event. In the scene, Geralt is bathing while Jaskier (played by Joey Batey), a bard who has been following the witcher’s exploits, pours buckets of water on him and adds bath salts with a playful flair. A loner at heart, Geralt grunts his responses to Jaskier. He is none too happy as the bard refers to him as a friend, or as he reluctantly discusses a plan to attend a royal banquet. Things are tense to say the least.

The tub scene in episode 5 of The Witcher is a different affair entirely and more closely aligned with the one from the video game. In it, Geralt shares a bath with Yennefer. The two sit back-to-back in a sizable tub in a candlelit room. Uncharacteristically, he smiles and flirts as the two discuss a business deal. Yennefer, no shrinking violet, gets the best of him, and he rises from the water in a huff as she stays put and lowers her body deeper into the water.

The Witcher Tub Scenes Were an Homage to the Game

While the differences are quite dramatic from the original scene in The Witcher 3, they are definitely an acknowledgement of that wildly popular scene. The Witcher’s showrunner, Lauren Hissrich, has confirmed just that. She told Collider:

“Obviously, we are not adapting the video games. The video games are an adaptation of the books, too, so they are pulling from the same source material we are. But I also know, being an American myself, that a lot of [people], especially American audiences, are mostly familiar with the games. The did not even know the books existed. So they are a part of our fanbase and it’s just a little wink and a nod to tell them we see them, too.”

Cavill, who is a fan of the video games, also did his best to pay tribute to the Witcher 3 by more accurately recreating the bathtub scene. Unfortunately, the design of the bathtub wasn’t in his favor. “I was trying to put my feet up and I couldn’t, the bath was the wrong shape,” Cavill lamented. “But I thought that might be a bit much as well.” Perhaps another bathtub opportunity will present itself in The Witcher season 2.
