The Witcher Season 3 Everything We Know

Warning! SPOILERS for The Witcher season 2.

Netflix’s The Witcher has taken the world by storm – and here’s everything we know about season 3. The first season of The Witcher was a hit for Netflix, as it was Netflix’s biggest first season to date. Nobody was surprised when it was renewed for a second season. Production of The Witcher season 2 was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, but it’s finally released on the streaming platform, continuing the story of Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer and their friends and foes.

Netflix is clearly confident in The Witcher, as they’re expanding the franchise in spin-offs and even animations, including the eagerly-anticipated The Witcher: Blood Origin. This makes The Witcher’s season 3 renewal really only a formality, and Netflix didn’t bother to try to pretend otherwise, confirming the renewal in September’s TUDUM event. The placement alone emphasized just how important The Witcher really is to Netflix’s upcoming plans, especially given the increasingly competitive streaming market.

The Witcher is based on the popular fantasy books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, and as such it’s changing format. The first wave of short stories by Sapkowski hopped around the timeline with impunity, and season 1 honored that. However, with season 2, the show has committed itself to the overarching narrative of Sapkowski’s longer stories. No doubt, The Witcher season 3 will continue this trend, making the series’ future a truly exciting prospect.

When The Witcher Season 3 Could Release

The Witcher Season 3 Everything We Know

Unfortunately, there’s likely to be quite some wait before The Witcher season 3. According to showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, the writers’ room wrapped up the scripts in early December 2021. “Actually, this is our last week [December 3] in the writers’ room,” she told TechRadar. “We’re almost done with the scripting phase, and it’s amazing. I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt… But the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season.” That process appears to have now begun, with co-star Freya Allan (Ciri) recently admitting she’s seen some Witcher scripts. Although production for The Witcher season 2 was disrupted by the pandemic, season 1 only took about three months to complete principal photography. Still, there’s a lot of VFX work involved in The Witcher, so it’s likely season 3 won’t be ready until the end of 2022 or early 2023.

The Witcher Season 3 Story (Based On The Books)

The Witcher Season 3 Everything We Know

The Witcher season 3 will be based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book Time of Contempt, in which the political intrigue at Thanedd Island erupted into an open coup, with Geralt drawn into the thick of it. Meanwhile, Yennefer’s attempts to train Ciri in magic go badly wrong, ultimately leading to Ciri being separated from her guardians, while Cahil’s arc moved in an unexpected direction when he became allied with Geralt rather than opposed to him. The Netflix TV series is clearly willing to deviate from the books on occasion. Season 2 was heavily influenced by Blood of Elves, but didn’t follow it exactly, while also revealing the truth about Ciri’s parentage a lot more quickly than Sapkowski’s novels.

The Witcher Season 3 Cast (As We Know It)

The main cast will presumably reprise their roles for The Witcher season 3, including Henry Cavill’s Geralt, Freya Allan’s Ciri, Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer, and Joey Batey’s Jaskier. Although the party will leave Kaer Morhen, meaning the other witchers likely won’t appear, key politicians and sorcerers will certainly return – including Anna Shaffer’s Triss, Mahesh Jadu’s Vilgefortz, and Graham McTavish’s Djikstra. The elven subplot will undoubtedly continue, while Mimi Ndiweni’s Fringilla and Eamon Farren’s Cahir should return as well. Hopefully Bart Edwards will have a major role as the Emperor, exploring some of the twists at the end of The Witcher season 2.
