The Witcher What Ciris Prophecy Means

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Witcher season 2.

A dark prophecy surrounding Ciri drives the narrative of The Witcher — and here’s everything known about it to date. Netflix’s The Witcher chronicles the adventures of Geralt, who makes his way in a savage world with many enemies and few people he can trust. The series is based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski, which were later adapted into a popular video game franchise, and they tell the story of how a solitary Witcher gets drawn into an ancient prophecy — and the life of the powerful Princess Ciri.

In the beginning, Princess Ciri’s life seems fairly normal, but as her story progresses, viewers realize that there’s more to her and her greater destiny. In The Witcher season 1, episode 1,” The End’s Beginning,” Ciri flees the burning Cintra, and in her grief, she unleashes a power locked deep within her. Ciri’s banshee-like scream and “magical pulse” make her a force to be reckoned with. Her powers manifest throughout the first season, and then become the driving narrative of The Witcher season 2, with the Princess coveted by elves, the forces of Nilfgaard, and even by a supernatural entity called the Mother In Darkness.

Ciri’s prophecy is a core element of the overall story arc and a recurring theme throughout The Witcher. It was made by an elven prophet called Ithlinne, famous for foretelling the end of the world — a coming ice age that will engulf the world in another 3,000 years. According to Ithlinne, an offspring born of Elder Blood will save the elves from destruction.

“An old elven prophecy about the end of the world: ‘The Wolf’s Blizzard approaches, the time of the sword and axe. The Time of the White Frost and White Light, the Time of Madness and Disdain, Tedd Deireadh, the Final Age. The world will perish amidst ice and be reborn with the new sun. Reborn of the Elder Blood, of Hen Ichaer, of a planted seed. A seed that will not sprout but burst into flames!'”

Ciri is clearly a being of unique potential; her Elder Blood possesses unique magical potential, so much so it can be used to create a new generation of Witchers. But her greatest power is the ability to travel between the spheres, with her scream shattering the monoliths that serve as gateways. In the books, this is the ability that makes her so unique, because — in this time when the “era of the sword and the axe” has begun — she is the only one who can ferry others to safety.

But Ciri is not just a pawn, shaped by a destiny she cannot control. She is a person, and — whatever others may believe — her choices will shape the world’s ultimate fate. In the books, she learns her ability to open gateways is far greater than The Witcher TV series has suggested, and she can travel through both space and time. It will be fascinating to see whether The Witcher expands on her powers in the same way, or whether she remains tied to the monoliths.
